Following up on this topic. Finished my rebuild (in between receiving new baby!!!!), and after properly bleeding the air from the system, my power steering is LIKE NEW.
I am very happy to have accomplished a successful rebuild, and as most of the little 'projects' I have had with this truck, I...
Alvin in AZ: never used one of those, will check it out! Damage is mushrooming of top of stud caused by inexperienced shade tree mechanic (i.e. me!).Following up on this topic, got the part from JBG, installed it, works like a champ! I give this product (Elgin drag link) two enthusiastic...
While rebuilding my steering box I note there is quite a bit of existing damage to the "worm bearing race nut". Someone before me obviously drifted it off instead of using the 150$ ford tool, so the previously square holes are pretty banged up... it still works fine (apparently), but I think it...
On a related note, my 1979 F150 4x4 most assuredly does NOT have front or rear sway bars.Did it come with them from the factory? (anyone know)?
For light truck duties are they appreciably noticeable? Trying to decide if I should hunt them out at the local junkyard, or elsewhere...
I am going to need a new drag link for my 79 F150 4x4. I like doing business with Bronco Graveyard, and they sell Elgin brand. Rock Auto would be my second choice, they sell Raybestos service and professional, as well as Moog and a couple others.I have no experience with Elgin Industries. Do...
Just wanted to reply with a 'happy ending' :)Got my OTC 7311A puller today. Got home after work, made short work of the pitman arm! Puller + 3 foot cheater + BFH, crank, tap w/ hammer, crank, tap w/ hammer, had it off lickety split with no damage!I can actually rebuild the sucker now... so...
OK I couldn't find one for rent anywhere in the area and apparently don't have the right friends, so I went ahead and bit the bullet, and bought one. 60$ out the door, still expensive but not HORRIBLE.Will follow up on progress, minus the time I will lose for my new baby, that should arrive...
UTfball68: problem is, I don't have enough friends that are into classic trucks... give me another dozen years and maybe I'll develop some ;)Alvin in AZ:
That steering box and pitman arm looks WAY smaller than mine. Mine's a 79, but its also a 4x4. It attaches on the other side of the frame...
DNFXDLI, thats about the same one I can find for sale cheaply. Problem is the opening at the bottom isn't big enough, and it looked like it was pretty tight fit for the outer diameter of the pitman arm, too.
Flareside: Can you describe your BFH technique? I've heard some use pickle forks for...
Hi folks;Have removed steering box and pitman nut from said box, now I need to pull the arm off.I've read a lot of people who say a puller is needed, and how it works, and how to assist it, and so forth. What I don't have is a PULLER! My local parts stores seem to stock the 15-20$ pullers...
Hi folks;I've got a 1979 F150 4x4 with a leak at the input shaft of the power steering box.I'm guessing I need to replace the seals.Questions:
1) Where is a good place to get replacement seals from? NAPA, Broncograveyard, other places?
2) Is it a good idea to just rebuild the thing...
BKW is my newest hero. Sir, I salute you!Good news: after cleaning and retightening, no leakage is observed from the hose.Bad news: the leak is actually coming from in front of the valve cover where the steering linkage attaches! It was running down the inch or two to the nearest low point...
On to the next problem!I have a small leak in my 79 4x4 power steering (Ford type steering box). It APPEARS that the leak is coming from the pressure hose where it enters the steering box (I cleaned it up then started it, and the drips appear to be coming from this hose fitting). I removed the...
Just following up on this post with a happy ending.I ended up replacing the ball joints, wheel bearings, and a ujoint on one of the front axles that had gone bad. In between the broken ujoint and balljoint I think I found my problem!Drove it around a little, and it was rock solid, no wobble...
I've heard LMC is not good from a couple folks on here. I have used them before, as well as Jeffs Bronco Graveyard and Rock Auto Parts. Any other online vendors worth dealing with?Never been to a NAPA, but several positive reviews from them as well.THANKS BKW!
Truck mysteriously started working again just before having it towed to the shop. My friend thinks it didn't want to go to the doctor!Doctor checked it out and everything seems fine. My current theory is that the transfer case was jammed up? Cause everything seems FINE now!Good, I guess :)
For example see these two links from Bronco Graveyard:

OK, next question(s):Took a look at the transmission housing, which has the following tag on the passenger side:D9TA7003 LA FE11
6 19 79 2 435This tells me its an NP435, made in 6/19/1979. It has a little hatch next to the tag, which I have read is a power take off port (PTO)...
Took another look at the mechanical linkage, everything seems OK with the pedal and rods and equalizer and stuff.I couldn't find a good way to wedge or wire the clutch back. With the mechanical linkage all the way back the clutch still wasn't disengaging, and I dont see the lever as being...
Manual clutch.I'll get back out there and poke around on it more as soon as my 'real job' will let me.Thanks to everyone for the comments, I'll definitely post some results as soon as I can get them!
No idea how old the clutch is... the whole truck is new to me :)I removed the return spring prior to taking the pictures (when I was adjusting it). There is a spring that runs between a bracket and the clutch release arm that's not shown in these pictures, but it is there and it works.I had...
OK, messed around with it some today.Extended the clutch release rod to its maximum distance (all the way out), still not disengaging the clutch.Pictures below, click on a thumbnail to link to the fullsize one (theres a total of 6 pictures in that album)(Link to all 6 pictures here...
