I dunno if it's been just me since no one has posted in this thread a few days...but since I came back yesterday, the entire site has been running pretty slow for me, opening threads, posting, accessing CP and New posts. And on occassion I'm getting error messages.

And not trying to kick chit...but if the problem hasn't been resolved for everyone else...does that mean we get the chit chat threads back...seeing as that's what was pointing to the problems?

I know Scott is looking into it on a daily basis with the provider. The large threads is one of the things they pointed to as being problematic. We resolved that with the real time chat. At this point I do not see the chat threads coming back.

I wish I had a solution for you guys with issues but don't at this time. There is a known bug with our version of vb that we are looking for solutions for but haven't gotten one yet.

Keep the reports coming because that's going to be how we fix the problem

thanks again

How much work is it to shut a thread down?...I'm not asking in a smartazz kind of way at all...and now knowing those kind of threads cause issues, could we not self regulate?

My thoughts exactly, you guys said 1000 posts was the magic number...so then just let us break it off to save the mods some time...and if it needs/should be broken off earlier, let us know. Not trying to start anything, but the chat threads were very enjoyable and one main reason I looooooved this site and looked forward to coming, and I feel now the 'homey' feeling has sorta dropped off. Without that sort of thread, my frequency around here will probably drop off (even though it hasn't seemed like it yet). Like I said not trying to kick up chit, and I'm just one member and this isn't my site, just the way I feel.

Most tech questions seem to get answered....having a nice chatty atmosphere is nice...do all your personal conversations pertain to technical matters?...just sayin' that's all...I for one agree with Ben.

We have had many requests for a real time chat feature to be added to this site by a number of different members. Here are 4 seperate threads asking for that very thing. This does not take into account all the PM's or misc posts sprinkled into other threads and topics.

http://www.fordtruckfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15654&highlight=chat

http://www.fordtruckfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10697&highlight=chat

http://www.fordtruckfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3238&highlight=chat

Based on real issues we have been having with the site, understanding the limitations of the VB software and our ISP along with a large number of member requests we decided to implement a "Real Time Chat" feature while eliminating the larger more resource intensive threads, including the chit chat thread.

The chat has been here since 10-14-09, 13 days. That is hardly enough time to fully evaluate the modification and see if it is going to work out or not. But a sure fire way for it not to work would be to allow the same old "chit chat" thread to go on. People would fall into their old comfortable habits rather then step out of their comfort zone and try the new idea. We understand that some people are resistant to new ideas. The strange thing to me is that the chat box does the EXACT same thing the chit chat thread did but without the avatars and signatures AND it's real time. Just like when you have not been logged on all day you can go back and read what others have posted.

So people want to chat and would do it in a thread but not the chat box? That is like saying you like to read the news and would read a paper but wouldn't read it on the internet, same thing different format. If you have the choice then make the choice you want but if not given a choice you would rather NOT read the news then to use a different format? Again I do not understand that.

As to the slow site issues, we're working on it. I don't have a great answer for anyone yet. I have not experienced any of the issues anyone is talking about. I am not doubting the issues are real but whether it is something we at FTF have the ability to control, fix etc is a different story. When I say we are trying to make it the best experience possible I am being completely honest with you guys but that also means we are working at it in between our real jobs that pay bills and families that demand time just like all of you guys have similar things going on in your life. Were looking to upgrade to a newer version of VB to see if that helps solve a known bug in this version of VB (not a bug we ever knew about until recently). were looking at different server packages, different advertising formats etc. But just like when your working on a car if you change all the parts at once then you may never really know which one was broken or which are offering real improvements.

I know there has been some talk in the past that maybe I'm an *** or that I'm a jerk or on a powertrip or whatever and you can all form your own opinions. What I can tell you is that I'm going to give you the straight scoop without all the sugar coating BS. I call it like it is. Someone has to be the PIO and when they can't find someone good they get a guy like me to do it.

So again:
1) Were working on the slow site issues
2) We are not, at this time, bringing back the chit chat threads. We have the chat box which is the exact same thing.
3) I'm sorry if anyone feels they don't want to be apart of FTF because it dosen't have the "feel" they want anymore. We are doing our best to appeal to the masses not the individuals understanding we can not be all things to all people.
4) I'm sorry if you hate me, I don't like knowing that, but I'll live.
5) I'll be happy to answer your questions as long as your prepared to accept the answers.

Thanks again

I do disagree with your analysis of point #2...the chat box is not the same....it is hard to follow and you cannot qoute what someone has said readily....just my 2 cents.

Believe me, I'm not resistant to change at all, as a matter of fact, I embrace positive change. What I don't like is the elimination of something that was popular and we're told to embrace the new thing, take it or leave it. And in my mind, if eliminating the thread that was the proposed problem we were having, didn't fix the problem...then why can't the thread come back.

As for the chat being the exact same thing, I have to disagree. Now it's open to everyone, so it can't be as relaxed, we get to 'enjoy' the younger members which I thought was a perk of being in the lounge. I also thought the thread was more accessible through notifications. Not to mention it was easier to reply in the thread through quoting and whatnot.

As for the feel of the site, I thought that's what made this place great, and has been expressed by other members as well...if the feel is changing great, but that's not why I liked the site. I just see the closing of the thread being received in the same fashion as when threads would be closed on the other Ford site.

As I said, I'm just one member, and this isn't my site, so I should just shut up...but I thought this place really did have a different feel to it and would listen to the members.

On edit...I really don't want to seem like I'm stepping out of line, just voicing my opinion. I know there are intricacies dealing with this site that I don't even wanna know about, and that it's a completely free site to me. So I really don't have a leg to stand on...I just really don't see the big deal, especially considering some members aren't having problems at all, eliminating the thread didn't fix the problem and it doesn't sound like you guys are entirely sure that it's not a problem on our end.

Your always welcome to post your opinion.

If you think the feel of the site is changing because a single thread has been closed then I am not sure there is anything I can say to change your mind. Because that is really what we did. We closed a single thread in a single forum and we provided a suitable alternative. We also have not touched any of the hundreds of off topic threads and posts in any other forum. Nor have we created any additional restrictions in any of those threads.

A single thread.
