Jumped Timing

I did like your suggestion of throwing the cam in...so I decided to pick up a 400 short block from O'Reilly's for $400 and I'm gonna throw all my go fast parts into it, and when I finally get a free weekend I'll swap anything and everything that is swapable. That way, the Bronco is still driveable for the time being. Saturday marks the day that I'll actually get the timing set done.

So just like that you build a new engine.. i hate you right now..
Yeah lots of Pics Ben :D

The O'Reilly's 400 short block for only $400? How is the quality of an autoparts store short block? I've heard that these motors don't last as long as the "conventionally" rebuild engines.

That's uber cheap!

Pics are coming...don't worry, got it completely torn down yesterday in a matter of 2 or so hours (including goofing off time with Dad)...then the house A/C unit decided to take a crap...so plans changed a little...going back to work on it in a bit. Only problem I have now is gonna be going through the entire timing process, so that'll probably be another thread.

HAHA...just a short block, and I plan on throwing all the good parts I have in it.

Yeah...I was going for a long block, but decided I didn't NEED a long block and didn't wanna cough up another $1100. As far as quality...I really have no clue, but it is warrantied for 100k, and all my mods were still covered in the warranty. Really I was just looking for something to get me around until I could build the original engine right, because my plans were gonna cut alot of corners and neglect alot of thing that could pose problems in the future. Yes, I was pleasantly surprised with how cheap it was too, but our O'Reilly's has a 'priced to beat' policy...and considering we have a couple mom and pop shops that do block reconditioning...let's just say it helps.

At my last Job I was at a O' smiley warehouse picking up oil and there was a bunch of short block sitting on pallets.
I started looking over them and was a little shocked to see that the cylinders walls were very pitted on all the blocks.
I'd looked those suckers over Ben before you pay for any thing.

Dang for $400.00 there can't be much to it.
Ben Napa has a good rep with their rebuilt engines, have you tried them?
Might be more money.

How much are you giving up on the core fee? They are going to want a short block back...

Yeah...after looking around some at other prices...I'm getting a little worried, although the return policy seems fine. For the record...it was one of those 'on a whim' purchases.

Yeah...I know NAPA has a good rep. I checked them out after I made the order at O's. The block still hasn't come in yet...so I'll probably just return it. Hindsight is 20/20 right?

$400 was including the the short block refund...I believe the core charge is in the $105 range.

Be sure to keep track of everything and take good pictures. We'll make it a tech writeup in the M block section...

Taking lots of pics...even my flub ups and jerry rigging...haha. Waiting on my gear set to come in and I should have it done in 2 more hours of work.

I have a idea :) (Shocking I know)
But! if you can't find a good junk block maybe you can buy a cheap O' Smelly Mblock and take it to a Machine shop and have them smooth every thing out?
Just a thought..

Ben might have to give it some extra time to get the block in. When I got my motor it took like 2 weeks or so just to get it. Now that I have a few issues the guy that sold it to me told me "I want nothing to do with your truck". But I guess these are the things you put up with when on a budget. So if $400 includes the core it might be worth waiting a bit.

Yeah...the O'Reilly's block hasn't come in yet, no cash has changed hands yet...so I'll give it a look over. My timing set will be in tomorrow at 7am. I decided to just go with the Cloyes HD timing set...I'm getting sick at throwing money into this particular engine...considering it should really just be scrapped. I also ordered a water pump from JBG...and it should be in tomorrow too.

I took some more pics today, and really looked at my cam gear...there is aloooooooooot more wear and tear than the original 3 chipped teeth I thought there was. But all that will be posted when I'm officially done.
