Hey Ben, O'Reillys carries Cloyes and so does Auto Zone you have to ask for it.

Just checked it, and yes, we can get it at AZ, but when you ask for it, tell them a performance chain set. That's where they will find it in the oh so wondrous Z-net...

Hopefully you will get someone a little better knowledgeable than one customer that came to me when the Advance down the street couldn't tell the difference between an M and a W motor...

Have you ever seen anyone install a timing set backwards? I have, and as soon as he tightened down the camshaft bolt the camshaft thrust plate broke into small pieces and fell down into the pan, because the front side of the camshaft gear has an extruded area that the fuel pump eccentric sits on. This butted up against the thrust plate and broke it. smilieneenar How does someone do that????

I just know that your smart enough not to make that mistake. You built Reds 400 right? You should know these motors pretty well by now.

Thanks for the info. I have an AZ less than 3 miles away...I might give them another shot, seems like they've turned their employee personelle around.

The PO actually rebuilt Red's 400...but I've been in a few 335's though. This is actually my first timing chain replacement though. But I have confidence that it'll be done right...just a butt ton of stuff to get outta the way to get in there...haha. Besides, I have my shop manual, Tom Monroe book and Haynes cued to the TC replacement pages...haha. For the time being, I can only get an hour or two in a day, so I'm off to do a little tinkering. Later fellas, and thanks for the info.

Ben,
I'm still confused on why you are sure it would be the timing, when it drove great after the problem and then not again. Would it really jump "back in" timing for a temporary period of time? As for the duraspark "checking out ok", that could be an intermittent issue, like only when it heats up, right?. I'd hate for you to do all this work for a new chain and find out that wasn't what it was! Sorry for my confusion, but good luck!

That's why I recommended the slop test ;)

Be fast.....or be last.
Will be curious myself to see what is going on.As was posted earlier, cam and valve timing issues don't usually heal up after a few hours. And,they usually make trouble in the valve train. That sound is pronounced. Please keep us posted as to what you find.

Doesn't sound like the chain jumped a tooth to me, that issue doesn't "self correct" itself, your issue sounds more sporadic in nature, i'd hate to tear into the front end of the motor for nothing, it sounds more electrical in nature to me e.g. ignition coil, module or pickup coil, like Milion said check your timing chain for excessive play, no need to rip into it if you don't have to.

Oh, I fully agree. I'm getting better at just nodding my head and let people make the mistakes if they don't want to listen. I've had those spark boxes run fine, then up and die, let it cool a little bit, go for a while, die, and just keep doing it. Had them run like crap, shut it off, fire it up and purr. It can pass on a tester, but yet be bad. A timing chain either works or it doesn't, they won't get back into place without assistance.

Ben, I tend to agree with the 2 above.
