Anyone know what the cause of severe carbon build up in the distributor would be from? The cap is completely black on the insie with a heavy coating of soot, as is the rotor. Obviously, these are gonna get replaced...but how do I prevent it? This cap and rotor was about 6 months old.

One more thing, anyone gotten a Holley rebuild kit lately? They're instructions suck balls. They have an exploded view of the carb and broke it up into individual pieces and numbered each piece. Well, the instructions to said kit essentially says to follow each number and take it off. WTF...some pieces don't need to be separated and some pieces aren't gonna get replaced. I see those instructions as a disaster waiting to happen for someone who has never torn into a carb. I believe they numbered somewhere around 200 pieces...yeah right.

Still looking for a preventative for dizzy carbon build up.

If theres carbon in it id say that ya got a short somewhere in the distributor might not be bad enough to kill the motor but it aint givin ya all the power.

Alright...appreciate it. I'll give this one another cap and rotor, see if the same thing happens, because I haven't done anything to this engine since I swapped it in. If it happens, guess it's time for a new dizzy...might go DUI.

Yeah a new Ford ones cheap if ya have a core. Id watch it though the one I got from Napa had a couple problems with it might try autozone or somewhere else instead. When we got one for the 76 from autozone we put it in and didnt have any trouble at all with it but the one from napa was shortin out and left me on the side of the road and whoever assembled it cranked the vauum advance way up and thats been the problem with the truck pingin.

Like Dan said it might be a bad cap. As for your Holley instructions I can't help you there. Don't follow the instructions

Hey fellas...finally got the Bronco all put back together yesterday. Got an issue though. I have some smoke and I couldn't tell if it was coming from the exh. mani's or outta the plug holes. It has a bad burning smell to it too, like plastic/rubber burning. It's a white smoke, but not coolant. The smoke isn't coming out of the tail pipes, it's contained in the engine bay. Anyway, since last night it has progressively gotten better, but the burning smell is still there. It runs just fine with no bad noises. That being said, I had this thing down to a short block, so I'm sure I messed something up. Any ideas or suggestions.
