It's pretty much the same as doing bearings on a 2wd, but with a few more things to take apart. Before I actually did one I thought it was way more involved then it really is.

Yeah...not too shabby at all

Same here. I've done them before on other vehicles...so I wasn't too worried about doing them, but some of the other vehicles had pressed bearings, so I wanted to make sure mine weren't.

I'm the other way around.

Couple 'I'm an idiot' questions:

1) Dropped the old radiator on one of the tranny cooling lines last night. It's not crimped, flattened or cracked...more mushroomed and mashed a little. I realize without a pic of the damage it'll be tough to give advice, but should I go ahead and replace this line or should there be no harm in running it this way, or try rounding it out a little more?

2) Last night before I pulled the heads, I was gonna try and get a rough idea of TDC...and I couldn't frickin remember, with the vc's off, the push rods need to be up or down on #1 to find TDC?

3) Pulling the crank pulley last night and the daggon balancer slid right off with it. Now, this has never happened to me before, they always came off separate and I needed a puller for the balancer. When I got both off, I tried separating and they weren't coming apart. I figure there's no harm in keeping them together. Anyone else dealt with or seen this before?

1. Need picture, but if it looks like fluid is flowing ok you could probably keep it.

2. Valves should be closed which means the push rod side would be down if I'm saying that correctly.

3. Never seen that before. I've always used a puller. Does anything look worn out like the little keyway thing. Or anything look odd about the balancer?

1) alright...I'll just keep an eye on it. Pretty sure I can get a new line for around $30 or go full SS on both lines for $80

2)Yeah that makes sense and what I needed to hear.

3)I never saw it before either, unbolted the crank bolt and the 4 connecting bolts and the pulleys and balancer all came off with a little die hook persuasion...but not much at all. Everything looked fine...a little rusty, but fine. No keyway damage or anything. However, I did notice what looked to be a little bit of silicone in the snout hole. But I figured if they were sealed together, with the amount of pulling I did, they woulda separated. But oh well, they worked fine before I pulled them, so I'll keep them together. But I'll take a pic of this too.

1. If you change it I would just go with the $30 line. It should still last quite a long time and you save $50.

3. I'd like to see a picture if you do take one just because I've never come across this before.

1) That's what I was thinking, the originals lasted 31 years and would have been longer had I not been a tard.

3) Will do, there were a few other things I was supposed to take pics of too, so I guess I can work yours in...haha.

Also, might want to check for cracked rubber on the internal part of the dampener. Cracked rubber means trouble down the road, like a shifting dampener.

Brought the dentside to work today. My 2003 Ranger ate a wheel bearing yesterday. Great. They're about a $300 part since the ABS and auto hubs are all tied in. This is why I hate newer vehicles.

There's something cool about the 30 year old truck getting you out of a jam by taking you 30 miles to work when the newer commuter is laid up!

Sorry about the Ranger Steve. My money says you have/will get a lot more attention today though...haha. And it's definitely cool the old tank could bail out the newbie.

Yep- I already had a guy make me an offer on it in the parking lot. Then he asked if the keys were in it so he could at least take it for a ride!

I'd just drive this truck everyday if I didn't have to drive so far to work--10 mpg adds up fast on this commute.

And you told that guy I called dibs first, right?

I hear ya. I only have a 15 mile commute each way, and with the Bronco, I'm dropping anywhere between $150-175 every two weeks on just gas. This week I'm driving Red and have put $60 in it since Thursday.

I drive 150 miles a day to work from the city house and 70 a day if I am up on the mountain. I have to drive a ........ ahem.... Saturn to commute. It gets 33-34mpg and is actually quite comfortable, but I would MUCH rather drive Burt. Of course for the price of gas I could save enough to get him painted in a very short amount of time!

You got it!

DAK- 33mpg is worth driving the Saturn for! I can pull about 20 out of the
4x4 Ranger with the 4.0 V-6, a five-speed and 4.10's. That's not doing too bad for that set up, I guess.

Sorry to change topic here but I didnt want to start a new thread on this......

Does anyone have a website that shows the pictoral exterior examples of what the different rear and front axles on the Dent?

I am trying to do a rear disc conversion and dont exactly know what rear end I have. So even if someone could post up the different rear axles that came on a 79 F250 4x4 I would appreciate it....

Ouch...2.5 hours to commute one way. Ever consider moving...haha. My boss has 4 banger Fusion and claims she get 30mpgs mixed driving out of it. So if I'm ever in the position of needing a commuter, I'll go that route. Another route I would consider is a late 90's early 2000's caddy. My dad had deville with the v8 that wasn't the northstar. He would routinely get 28mpg's highway...but it dropped to about 16 city.

Don't worry about changing topic, that's what happens on FTF, besides this is just a chit chat thread anyway. Now to your question:

The axle code will be on your Warranty plate, post the code and we can tell you exactly what axle and gears you have. That said, the only rear axle available for your truck is a D60.
