I was going to suggest the ball joint press as well. You can get those as "loaners" from some parts stores. They work slick as hell, as they are about the perfect size for it.

Hopefully, the auto repair shop can do the U joint in the morning, and I can reinstall tomorrow afternoon. He is an "old iron" enthusiast and enjoys working on older vehicles. It is supposed to get up to 37* tomorrow.

No loaners here, Roger. You have to pay to play.

Want one? I got a few left I think... Loaners that weren't good enough any more, either broken/missing parts. Sad thing is, shipping is probably about as much as getting one from Harbor Freight and pay their low shipping... I had some fringe benefits from working the AZ...

I scavenged parts from the ones that weren't salvageable and made good sets with the parts. (Didn't want you to think I was going to send you junk... )

Roger, I wasn't even thinking that. :) I think the shipping would be pretty expensive. Thank you very much for the offer.

i used dads 4wd one on my s10's 2wd front end.. was surprised how firmly they were in there... took my 20" breaker bar + 3' pipe and me leg pressing the pipe to get them to budge... (which when i was in HS i could leg press 380lbs.. not bad for someone that only weighted 135lbs wet back then..)

Got the U joint pressed in today. The guy charged me $15 for the U joint and $5 to press it in. I had him install a 30 deg zerk. I think it will work just fine. There is plenty of clearance. I fully expected to pay for an hour of shop labor.

Got the drive shaft oriented, installed, and got everything greased. The new U joint took a lot of slop out of the slip joint.

Test drive to come later.

Looks like success! Went for a 40 mile drive: 20 miles on highway with the hubs in, up to 104 KPH:)D), and 20 miles back on a snow-packed dirt road in 4WD. No noise, no vibration, and no binding.

I still can't get the grease gun nozzle over the zerk, but the needle tip works great with the 30 deg zerk.

Once again, thank you everybody for the help and advice.
