Jumped Timing

Hey Fellas...I suspect I jumped the timing in my Bronco (79, 351M, C6), but I wanted to hear your opinions. Today, the Bronco was driving fine, I got within a .5 mile of my destination and I started to hear some god awful pinging...I just thought it was the cheaper ethanol gas. So I parked, got what I needed, hopped back in the Bronco, it turned over but wouldn't start...I attempted several times, and I finally got it to start. However, there was a lot more 'pinging' and she didn't want to run...I drive a couple hundred yards to the driveway of the parking lot...and she died. The same starting scenario took place again...get out on the road...same clanking and pinging is going on, I can't break 25 mph...and I limp home 3 miles at 15mph. I get home can't see anything out of the ordinary...but it's dark and I couldn't really make a good assessment. So a half hour passes, I go back out...and she fires up perfect, I drive her around the block and she's great, and then I park her again and head out for a while. I come back home, she fires up fine, but she doesn't want to idle and when I put it in gear, she doesn't seem to want to break 1500rpm. So as I said, I think I jumped time...any other thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Glad to see you back Ben!!!

Does it have the temp ported vacuum valve on the manifold that is between the vacuum advance and the manifold??? That might be it???

Good question Biff...I have no clue...I'll check it out more tomorrow. I'm off now to pull my neighbor's mini van outta the ditch. I should be back full time tomorrow...haha.

I wonder if this is a Vacc issue Ben.
Does your Dizzy have vacc advance? I wonder if your dizzy is messed up.

I would put a timmimg light on it. Then if that's alright I'ld check inside the distributor. Maybe the advance weights are rusty or dry. I think it's distributor related because it runs fine sometimes!!!

If it has jumped time, it wouldn't run well at times, never heard of one coming back in time sometimes.

I definitely would go against chain since it more or less came out of it. Spark box or distributor problems have my vote. Could be a vac issue as well, if it loses vac tot he distributor, it will go full vac advance.

Hey fellas...tinkered with it today, and it's definitely the timing set up...the dizzy, vacuum, etc...all checked out good. So I have a nice little bit of work in front of me. My next question is...I'm thinking of going with the Cloyes double roller chain, will I need a new cover for this? Any other suggestions for a timing set up? I also decided while I'm in there, I should do the water pump too...I was gonna go with the Flow Kooler unit...can anybody vouch for these? I've dealt with their other products with no issues and figure it's the way to go.

I used Cloyes Gear and chain with no problems but mine was called street true.something. But I ain't to sure if it was a a double roller chain set.
Here is what I am getting next.

According to Jegs and Summit! it will fit under the existing cover :D
As for the Water pump, Sorry dude I've dealt or ever known any one who has..
Personally I'd stick with the tried and true YelloThumbUp

Yeah Cliff...that's the one I'm looking at for the 335 series...but it won't ship until the end of the month from summit. I may go with the comp cams version.

Tex...thanks for the info.

Side note...before I tear into this, does anyone want me to take pics of the process and do a tech write up, or will I be wasting my time??????
