How exactly do you figure ur gas milage out? I use to know but i forgot.

No clue, but at 60 it sounds wound up tight to me. Then again...I don't hear very well.

Oh..you meant modern vehicles. I just set the cruise at the speed limit and pay no attention to the tach. I have 5 forward gears and a lock up converter though.

Around here the speed limit is 55 (or lower)

The math is pretty easy, if you know your tire size. There's online calculators that make finding tire circumference easier, then all you need to know are transmission gear ratio (1:1 on your truck, I assume), axle ratio, and a few unit conversions.

I make it right about 2k, Brian, for that truck at 60 mph.

That is fast enough in a 50 year old truck with basically stock everything. It was not meant to drive fast. Bricks are not aerodynamic.

Besides...the drive is half the fun. The attention you get is amazing.

Maybe when I get all the suspension done, sway bars on, and new shocks...it won't be quite so interesting at highway speeds.

Oh...Anthony. The last time I checked the 56...I managed to get 15.53 MPG mixed driving. Yes...a lot of that was in Branson, MO. Stop and go, up and down hill. You know how that is. You have been there...right?

The most accurate method you can use without installing sophisticated equipment is:

-Fill up your tank to the BRIM! This mean, top it off until it will not take any more gas. Record the number on your odometer.
-Drive the truck for however long you'd like... The more gas you burn, the more averaged your numbers will be.
-Fill your tank back up to the BRIM! Again, top off until it wont take anymore. Get a receipt so you can bring the number of gallons you pumped back with you into the cab.
-Take your current odometer reading and subtract the odo reading from when you filled up last time. Take THAT number and divide it by the number of gallons that you just pumped. Presto, that's your average mileage.

lol.... Is there a way that i can figure it out without spending 240 bucks?

You don't have to drain your entire tank... You can drive 2 miles and then come back and fill up if you'd like... But you need to realized that the MORE miles you drive, the more AVERAGED that figure is going to become. And thus, more accurate.

95 bronk.

I figure how many gallons i filled in the truck.
and how many miles i went to the tank. or as in this trip.

I figured how many gallons over the trip and how many miles.

divided 840 miles by how many gallons i used.

Better way is to figure it up when you fill up. the next time. And then say you filled up 4 times. You have 4 figures that are more than likely different.

You add all the numbers up and then you divide it by how many different numbers you have. So your sum of the 4 fill ups and divide it by 4

Be sure to fill up at the same place you did before hand, some gas stations are built on slopes. Filling to the brim isn't neccesary if you do this, just to the "click". YelloThumbUp

Or just push the button on the trip computer thingie. :)

The Marquis and the Vic are geared really long-legged. 70 mph comes in at a almost-idling 1500 rpm or so. Back in the 60's, Oldsmobile brought out a "Turnpike Cruise" package for the Cutlasses. What they did was stuff a regular-fuel 400 with dual pipes, 3-Speed turbohydramatic, 442 suspension, and a 2.29 axle ratio in the Cutlass body. The 400 slogged out so much torque it didn't need gearing or revs to move. Those cars got 18-22 mpg hwy- which is astounding for a big-block two ton brick. The option died for lack of interest, unfortunately, but it was an interesting experiment.

Buddy has an Olds Aurora with one of those things. Swore up and down it wouldn't stay over 26 on a trip of any length...So I drove the car from VT to ME and got 26.1, first shot. Not like I was crawling, either- 10-15 over on two-lanes for most of the trip, and one blast to triple-digits on the interstate near the end.

Gentle throttle pressure, smooth acceleration, use the topography to your advantage... Getting good mileage can become a game, and it's probably safer than a lot of other car-games you can play...

how is that possible? your rpms don't go up with speed?

i'm not factoring in wind resistance, just rpms...and in turn more gas

it possible cause i can get into overdrive and go 70 at 1900, kick it down to 3rd and get up to 80-85 and it will fall into overdrive again around 1900-2000rpm

I guess he has 2.73 gears and at 65 he's in 4th gear, but doesn't shift into overdrive until 80 or 90.

I know you won't believe it Nextras, but wind resistance is a HUGE factor in these trucks.

haha yeh wind sucks, feels like im gunna take off when im on my way to the track lol

my gas mileage SUCKS trust me, not wsayin its good

Wow.. you need gears!! Make no wonder your motor pings and your milage sucks, it's operating at 100% load all the time.
