With the 3.0 gears that 390 could get 12mpg easy. I always got 13-14 out of mine but it runs about 8.9:1 compression...

I've got 3.07:1 gears

for a daily driver, i voted 300

but...how far are you driving? i drive 6 miles a day, so 8mpg vs 18 isn't that big of a deal in the long run.

I average a good 70 miles a day not including errands.

Remember what I said Cliff.
If you get a 460 your goin to have to change out most your drive train.

The only thing I might have to change is the front driveshaft maybe and the engine perches. Unless I get a AOD with it. But I have a few idea's rolling around in my head.

70 miles a day
$2.50 gallon

460 - 8mpg - $21.58/day
300 - 15mpg - $11.60/day

difference is $300/month

i'd buy a different daily driver and put a 460 in this one, or go with the 300

If you are driving around 70 miles/day and not worried about having alot of power, I'd go with the 300-6. You'd still have enough torque with that motor to do your light hauling and what not and somewhat economical. Remember, fuel prices are going back up again and will probably continue to keep going up. One thing to look at if you want power along with some better MPG would be to get an OD tranny onto your 360/390 or even 460. You'd probably only see a couple more MPG with an OD, but it's something to think about.

70 miles is a long way to drive. I voted 460, then read the thread.

I'm thinking buy a beater ranger to drive, register the truck you're building as a classic (to keep insurance down) and use the ranger as you DD and drop the 460 in the old truck.

Ryan good idea but I'm 6'4" tall and have a hard time getting into a Ranger.

for $300/mo you could buy a newer f150 with the 4.6? even my mom's 5.4 expedition gets 17/18 on the highway. that's no ranger

I don't like payments. But I'm sure I can find something cheap.
