Well, if you worry about gas mileage, forget all of your choices. remember you are driving a vehicle as aerodynamic as a brick, weighing as much as a house. :p

I vote 390. Plenty of torque and a direct bolt in in your case.

The 460. Not only is it quite popular, which makes after market parts easy to find, but the fact that the 460 is such a capable unit, and will kick the living sh!t out of any other engine out there. I was contemplating a 400 a while back, but nahhh.

I bought a Ford cause I like Fords.

Yeah I pretty much figured that, but 70's Fords were the worst of the big 3 for gas mileage in stock form. So all of your choices are a moot point. The FE is just a cool engine, period. It is the plow truck motor of choice in the midwest.

Well if its gas mileage your looking for, you could always put a tuned port 350 in it. smiliestirthepot

Closet chevy lover are you?

No, (last 3 trucks PSD with issues hardley qualifies me as a closet GM fan. 2 6 liters and now a 6.4, all 3 bought new) but they are giving them away right now new in the crate. Probably close to what you would spend in a rebuild with much of the same outcome in performance. Gas mileage would be way better.

Nope but if Ford was giving away crate engines I would get one.

You could do a 12v cummins. No one here would rag you for that and it would get you into the mid 20's mileage wise.

Too expensive. But I know where 2 older ford diesels are,but I'm sure they would have to be rebuilt.

The 6.9s didn't set the world on fire, (hp and tq wise) but they can be very dependable (fuel system was the biggest problem on them) with newer upgraded parts. You could probably build 2 of them for what you could an FE or 460. The hard parts themselves are cheap. Heck a 6.0 or 6.4 rings pistons rod & mains and gasket set is less than $1500.00 if you shop. The older cornbinders ought to be half of that. It will also run on 100% bio without any issues should you be inclined to get an appleseed processer.

300 is the way to go... the torque, the fuel economy, the price of parts... (really cheap).

I have a 460 and its the greatest engine I have ever owned.
But since he all ready has a nice 390 wouldn't just be cheaper to keep it?
If he goes with a 460 he'll have to get a new tranny maybe a new drive shaft and seems a little cheaper to stick with what he has.
