Duncan when you get your DC parts would you let me know how it is? I was with a friend about 4 years ago when we stopped at DC it was a bad experience all the way around.

Ummm...Cliff, I have a good bit of experience with DC as well. If we ever meet up, I can show you the difference between NOS/OEM, DC and LMC. And all of these have paint on them...the LMC fiasco, was an expensive mistake. You can literally see and feel the difference on all of the body panels. And I guess DC's quality when compared to NOS/OEM is relative, not perfect, but the best you'll get aftermarket.

More progress....got the front axle and associated things removed, gotta go get a stamp set so I can ID left/right stuff. The bolts that hold the brackets on for the forward of axle shock were quite loose. There was some rust in the spring pad but nowhere near enough for it to be a concern.

I'm hoping I can find some NOS or some in better condition than these hub actuators...the one is very faded...I might try soda blasting it.

The ol' custom piece of 4 x 4 for extra height :D

Going to do more work today, remove the radius arm crossmember, tailgate, trim, door hinges and if time allows, start stripping the doors...latch, regulator etc.

Duncan looks like you're almost done stripping the frame. I still can't believe how clean your truck is.

It's coming, seems like it is taking forever though. Hopefully this week I can recruit 3 more bodies to help pull the box off. I need to get the tailgate disassembled and the rest of the trim off.

What did you find now?

My gas gauge wasn't working so I got a new float, and filter got it all in nothing. My son told me that someone cut wires for the fuel pump and sending unit so it's junkyard time. Just a few of the of the small problems.

Truck looks really clean D,
There was a set of those NOS red dials on ebay, I think it was Wesley's, but it was started at $100 for the dials only. I bought a set of NOS D60 red dials for $35.
I always used pencils to block rubber lines. And they always got broke. Your idea's better.
It will probably take longer to put it back together. I hate doing this because 1 wrong washer will stop me for the day or longer till I get it right.

Cool beans Duncan!

lol.

I'm quite D44 straight axle illiterate, so I have an easy question. Is there a joint at the end of the axle tube that connects to a really small shaft that allows turning of the wheels?

No comment..I have wiring issues like that on my truck thanks to that aux. gas tank.

I would have no problem with $100 for the dials. And you are right about the reassembly...esp. given that I want to replace all bolts with zinc chromate ones and Stover nuts.

Yeah..the upper and lower ball joints go into the holes on the yolk...then there is a U/J between the two shafts..I'll snap a pic for you.

Thanks Duncan for clearing that up. I'm still new to 4x4 systems, and my TTB setup only came with the intermediate shaft that comes out of the carrier., so I had the slightest idea how it worked.

More progress..got the transmission crossmember off, cab and rad support bushings (which sucked hugely!)...then removed the rivits that held the cab support brackets on...what a friggin' chore...and I now have to build up two of the holes because what I thought was center of the rivit wasn't..grrrrr.

Not much left on the passenger side now.

79_Truck_0801.JPG

Shaun....ball joints slip into the holes on the yolk and the axle shaft slips through the center...then into the spindle, then the hub goes over that:

A lot more work is left...I am going to have to file/grind all the edges of the frame for powder coat, all of the small pieces are going to be glass blasted, need to get the frame checked for straightness then redo some of the welds at the front.

Not to bad considering.

I had entertained ideas of doing the transmission with the same guy that is helping with the engine but have decided to have a guy here do it. He is going to gut it, I will take the case back home, grind/clean it all up for powdercoating and then take it back to hime for assembly. I am going to change the 1st and 2nd gear set out.
