Okay, here is today's progress. I've got a good bit of the built up dirt out. This truck was definitely used for its intended purpose.

The rust isn't going through anywhere, so far just really bad surface rust.

I got a layer of sound deadener on the back of the cab. Now I have to decide if I like it black or want to paint it white.

So will you be doing the underside too?

Underside of the cab? Possibly, but there is a fair amount of cleaning that would have to be done first. Maybe over Christmas or so, but no time soon.

That is a nice truck and what you're doing will help protect it.

Thanks. And I do plan on doing what I can for it. The underside is nice and rust-free, so I'm sure it can wait another few weeks to be coated.

I'd like to see how the deadener holds up to heat before putting in under there.

Since you will be taking the bed off that would be a good time to have it LineX or the other bedliner applied before putting it back on.

Yea. I planned of lining the inside of the fender flares and possibly the underside of the bed. I guess I can do that and the cab then.

FWIW...I had a long talk with the bodyshop that is doing my 79 and I brought up bedliner as undercoating. They suggested that I don't, as it can crack and trap moisture. They suggested a POR15 coat then a matching body color. I did a bunch of reading and called a few other places and that was the general consensus.

I didn't know that bedliner could crack.
