For those of you not following along with this mini-series, please do a search of my posts.

For the rest of the class.....(where is that head banging smilie....)?

Rookie mechanic couldn't get the replacement engine back in correctly, kept asking for more time, more time. Last Thurs I finally lost patience and told them I wanted it by Friday evening. Rookie called me begging to have it out till next Monday (8/29) which would put it at the 4 week mark on just the engine replacement only.

Come Monday he called, stated motor was in, it has good compression etc.............but, (gawd how I'm hating that word). States she has a (and I quote) "Slight ignition misfire"....and could he have it a bit longer to change sparks etc out. I gave him till noon on Tues..period.

I called the owner on Tues am after doing a search on this forum, I just know it won't be anything simple. Proceeded to suggest the mechanic might be a tad out of his element etc. "Oh no....he's good, it's just a XYZ". Uh huh....suuuuuure. Around noonish I get a call from the owner. "Well we checked this and we replaced that ......but". So, bottom line I told him flat out I'm taking it to another mechanic, period. I'm not paying you till we get this figured out.
Went to pick it up, drove it next door to bank drive thru an the dang thing nearly died on me. Drove it to my next stop and I had to have a foot on the gas and one on the brake just to keep it running. That truck was shaking soooo bad the whole right side of the dash was vibrating. I decided to drive it directly to the "good" mechanic and prayed to every god / deity I could think of just to get it there.
Pulled in, walked into the office, slapped the keys on the counter and about burst into tears.

New mechanic has it, he's aware of who the other mechanic/shop is....I have faith (fingers and toes crossed) I might get to drive my truck before Christmas.

Anyone want to bet me on this???

(thanks for letting me vent guys!)

Yup they are really easy to work on. In fact she will have her whole new engine done before you can say the word headgasket smilietease

I don't think the guy necessarily should be fired but the owner should be more aware of the mechanic's ability

real quickly.... anyone else think the mechanic may have gotten the firing order wrong? now i cant remember what year this truck is etc...

you need to ask what year engine was swapped in.. if its a pre-94 then they need to use the old 5.0 truck firing order. if 94-96 they need to use the 5.0HO/5.8 firing order...

^^^ I would say that is probably a good possibility. It probably is something simple. It sounds like the job was passed down to the lowest employee since it was mostly free work and no commission to be made if the shop works like that.

Yea prob messed up firing order, unless motor is a complete POS, my bronco ran decent on 5 cyls lol, mouse nest under the intake, plus broken valve and no compression on cyl num 2

Her truck has a 351, per her original post. Could the firing order be off? Sure, it happens, but 351`s only had one firing order (providing a 302 cam wasn`t swapped in), and not every tech can read or knows how Ford numbers their cylinders. I`m very sorry for your luck. This whole thing to me is just one of those "REALLY?", ordeals. You need a new shop. Granted, this is an older truck, but it`s not like we`re talking about a Stanley Steamer, ya know?

Spark, fuel, air. If that engine even had a little bit of each of those then it shouldn't have a super hard time running. Possibilities-- bad plugs, wrong firing order, clogged fuel filter, bad injectors, or it could be something like a real bad sensor or TFI module or somethin... Checking the codes might help rule that last one out.

Checking the codes might help rule that last one out.

That was the first thing I was thinking, if all it takes is a handheld to tell you what's wrong (or at least give you a code) why not rule out the easy stuff first???

Thanks for the encouragement guys!! What keeps me going is sooner or later everything in the truck will be new and run perfectly (HA)....might cost a bit .....but =)

I have reason to be in the area of the "good" mechanic today. Will swing by with muffins or something and check on her. With the long weekend, he might not have worked on it yet.

Seriously wish some of you lived closer.

Which state do you live in? The state of confusion? :D

When I first saw this, figured you were having a bit of a laugh that I don't know anything about trucks, or mechanics. Ok...I can accept that.

But now I see that others find it hilarious, mind explaining why my expensive situation is pure amusement to a moderator of the forum?
