Chris did you get water in your oil when yours was hydrolocked?

No need to get defensive Mike. I'm just saying it's not real smart to be pushing your daily driver to the limits, especially when you're a young buff like us that doesn't have a lot of money to throw at repairs to his truck. I'd mud my truck two if it weren't my daily driver.

Cut what crap out? I like to use my truck once and a while, not just stare at it. Maby if i didnt have that talked up "460 Air tube" my motor would still be running.

If that 95 cant handle what i can throw at it then it aint the truck for me. After the motor is rebuilt or whatever i gotta do, im selling it and getting a 78 or 79 bronco. Now those will take some crap.

O BTW Valance number two....

[Dad hat on] I got the same lecture from my son- right after he sheared the driveshaft off of an almost new truck. :headbang: And again, when he bent the lower A-Arm (and had to replace the whole damned lower carrier it was attached to). And again when they removed a few pounds of sand out of the clutch housing. :headbang: The problem is, none of these truck are designed for that type of use- period. The mods that will make them true off-road vehicles will also render them almost undriveable on pavement.[/dadhat]

Anyways- don't take it personal. I'm just hoping this is a "live and learn" experience. If you want to really go out in the mud and water like that, get something set up for it. Just don't plan on using it as a daily driver, since you'll constantly be fixing something (why do you think we trailer to and from?).

Funny thing is... many trucks attempted that mud hole, most didnt make it, some did, but no one hydrolocked.

...but no one hydrolocked.
false - one did

anyway, really sucks dude. i'd hate for that to happen to me, but you seem handy enough to fix that. on a positive note, you should have a really solid engine when ur done. is there anything else you'd like to do to it while you're out of commission.

No no water in the oil. I would have tried to get it runnin before you started pullin her apart. I did, pulled the plugs out in the woods, got the started to finally turn over, cranked till all the water stopped commin out, then put all the plugs in, then started it up and drove 2 hrs home with massive rod knock.

i had a friend who decided to take an 87 pontiac fiero swimming. that thing is still on the road 8 yrs later so i guess he managed to turn it off before water got too far up inside it but he cldn't get it pulled out till daylight and by then it was completely soaked. all you cld see at the highest point was one corner of the roof. we put it up on stands and took out all the interior, dried and drained everything, never even cracked the motor open other than the plugs and replacing the dizzy. kid argued abt having to drop the gas tank till the electrical was dry enough to get a reading on the gas guage... 3/4 full when he'd been on the E he said.... *de du de* just goes to show you NEVER know what you're getting when you buy a used car! he sold that thing to some little high school girl and she still peddles around town in it.....

Ok i tore her apart. Whole upper end is off, heads off. What i found was a very nice cross hatch still (almost 81K original miles) that made me bumbed out. Cylinder 4 has scoring and an obvious notice that a rod is bent.

Like i said it doesnt look bad, but yet the motor is still in the truck, oil pan is still on, and i really need to get a good look at what is going on. With the heads off i still cant turn it. Thats kinda getting me worried...

are you trying to turn it by hand? or trying to crank ot from inside?

u never really clearified how u were turing this over.. you definetly need to be turning this by hand, plus is the fact ur starter probably isnt working anyways

. Maby if i didnt have that talked up "460 Air tube" my motor would still be running.

it didnt seem obvious that having a intake tube that low would cause it to suck up water?

My teacher the other day was talking about his old service trucks with that style of tube when they would hit a puddle it would hydro-lock the engines. So ford rebuilt the engines and set them up with a improved design IE above grill one..

Yea it may give you some more umph, thats the only reason i could think that you would put that on. but there is a reason they are hard to come by.
:wtf:

but if it is rusted solid or something like that. pour some atf, brake fluid mix and it should eat the rust away. throw a bit of wd 40 and MM oil int he mix as well.

if not you could have fubared a bearing or a couple and stopped the damn thing solid.

Improved design? You're mistaken. They continued to use that intake duct on the 300's and 460's until the engines were put out of production. They did not eliminate the duct because of design flaw, they eliminated it because the engines were redesigned when they changed over to modulars.

And wasn't it you, Anthony, that was bragging about how your smallblock V8 was the only one in the planet that came with the BETTER 300/460 intake duct?

better for offroading yes...
im sorry i rather loose umph then loose the engine when i hit a puddle in the street.
Is there another reason why ford would rebuild the engine free of cost to the customer and switch to the style i have?

moving on now shall we.

I would be very surprised to see an engine pull water through the grill when hitting a "puddle" in the street, seeing as the grill is further forward than the tires are; the tires are the first thing to contact the water and since we're speaking of a MOVING vehicle, it's highly implausible that the water would jump FORWARD and back into the grill.

Now Mike went through water that was above his bumper (if I'm understanding correctly), and the bumper is further forward than the grill, so it makes sense that the water could deflect off of the bumper and through the grill.

Conclusion: driving through water that will not reach the front bumper is fine when using the 460 duct. One might suck a bit if rain through the grill as it falls from the sky but it would barely be enough to make the filter damp let alone hydrolock the engine. Now if someone takes their truck through deep mud and water, I can agree that this duct might not be AS suitable as the smashed pigsnout, but a snorkel is best suited for such purposes.

ive driven through water midway up my bumper and my filter still got wet. Explain that one.

curious questions why does water come from the front of the truck and get my grill wet when i hit puddles?

when your front tires hit water. anything over a few inches deep. some will spray back, side to side and towards the front causing you to hit it...think about it that tire displaces the water.

That is self explanatory.

A little bit, but not enough to cause any damage unless it's really deep.

Since it already went to pot.

As advice to anyone, if your doing any offroading... Get rid of that air tube....
