Ill probably stick to 390 just because that's what we've always run. My truck is a lifted f150 with 35x15.5x16 swampers. Between the tires and carb out of adjustment the 360 doesn't want to get up and go like it should. My last truck had a 360. It's was stock and I could spin Brodie's in the field or hop on it and top out pretty quick for a truck. Then this new one I had the pedal to the floor damn near it got load but was very sluggish
Check and see what kinda gears you got in the axles. My truck has 3.07s and it isnt awesome for dragging around a 7000 lb camper. Id be willing to bet you got 3.54s...throw some 4.10s or 4.56s in it and rebuild your carb and you may be suprised....plus the lower gears (numerically higher) will make a 390 that much sweeter.
The carb is brand new. It just needs readjusting its like 1000 per axle to gear it down and I'm not wanting to put that much into axles when I have a few other things to worry about on it
You could put a 428 crank in and make it a 410 or 416 with an overbore. As far as I know, the 360/390 parts will interchange...the difference being the stroke.
So a cam, intake and headers will make a great improvement....I had a 75 F250 with just carb, intake and headers and it was quite happy with 35 mudders.
I thought about headers but idk what ones to get I have brand new pipes for it but I don't want to pith them on until I figure out if I'm gonna use headers. I'm gonna do a cold air intake that should help some. They make a cam for the 390 that will make the valves open more and stay open longer and makes a big difference
Stylin Trucks is a good company, got a lot of sport truck things from them (Bed Rug, Street Scene sport mirrors, Granatelli Mass Air Flow sensor, Granatelli spark plug wires, fog light bulbs, etc.)
I built this one using the air filter off of an 85 351. I took the snorkel off of another one, mounted it, and there you are. Than go to the hard ware store and buy some dryer exhaust ducting, cut holes in the core support, mount the hoses, load the housing with a K&N filter, and you`re in.
Thanks Roy. Although I can`t take credit. I stole it right out of Ford`s play book, circa 85 or Mustang 5.0 4v. It is however the second one I've built out of my goody stash, and it`s going on my neighbors 400 just as soon as I finish it.
instead of dryer exhaust tubing there is stock fresh air tubing from lmc for 25 dollars its 25.5 inches long. it would look better in my opinion then maybe rivet aluminum inserts to the core support and connect these to those. i think i'll do that. i can't find another air cleaner assembly though
2 feet of fresh air tubing won't be enough...why buy a prefab type unit that will need to be modded when you can do something like Justin suggested for a trip to the wreckers yard....cheap and easy.
As far as your cam description....remember that if it's based on a 390, it will move the rpms up in a 360.
