360 upgrades 76 f150

i went out a few minutes ago to take the truck on a couple mile drive to just see how its doing. wouldn't start pumped the gas wouldn't start for more than a couple seconds, pump it up fires right up but knocking really bad and missing open the hood everything seems okay, pump the gas fire it up rev it a couple times and runs smoother and idles on its own drive down the road i notice a ticking sound that almost sound slike sticky valve and a humming noise. so not sure what my next step is i already plan on rebuilding the carb. should i pull the valve covers and let it idle and see if evrything is moving correctly? i'll take a video too.

i'm going to pull evry single spark plug tonight and check them and regap them.

also could the stupid valve in the heat/ac line be making the engine run hot? i notice it activates through a vacuum hose and doesn't budge at all.

my electric choke isn't even hooked up so the check is always open

Heater control shouldn't make a difference....choke should only come into play when cold....although if stuck, it can create all kinds of issues.

If you hear a tapping...it's not normally the valve...a lifter perhaps...have you done a wet/dry compression test?

i tested it by turning it over then starting it in a couple cylinders. it will take hours to get to the others with the test and will have to do it in the morning because the truck is too loud to run tonight.

Ok....but there is no shortcut to figuring out the engine...as I have told you, you have to go step by step...no different that what a "stealership" would do...nobody is Kreskin.

i know i know. i just don't like working on it because i can't pull it into the garage and have to stand on the bumper where i'm bent over all day. i'll buy a rebuild kit asap and some cleaner. then go throw and test all cylinders for compression and all plugs. i'll try tuning the carb better too and gotta figure out why my engine heats up so fast and gets so hot

If you don't enjoy working on the old iron then best rethink what you want to drive....even the new trucks are a PITA and need a specialized creeper...ask Vince :D

i hate new trucks. if i was to get one it would be 2002 or newer f250
i enjoy it i just need an easier way to do it like parking it inside and yanking the hood off so i can get at it better. i can't complain about working underneath it, plenty of room.

And a post 02 would be better?...holy crap.....I have done my damnedest to try to help you but you insist on not listening to advice presented....I'm done...best of luck with the truck...and remember that there is a good amount of info in the manual subforum.

No it's not better its even worse I would just prefer one of those if I wa to ever get a new one. Ill always prefer the 5th and 6th gen over anything though.

This is froze shut. There is a tiny space about 1/16th big so I could see how that would make it heat up too much.
