Working on the brakes

Finally got the rear brakes on with a little superhuman, early morning strength. I just need to bleed the brakes now.

Got a bleeder or are you doing it the old fashioned way?

Got the front brakes done this afternoon. That had to be the easiest set of disc brakes that I have ever done. Rotors were in very good shape, with some material still left on the old pads.

Rear brakes were bled this morning. BIG difference in how the brakes work. I went through a LOT of brake fluid to get all the air out. One of the bleed screws was plugged, so I went to the parts house. The manual listed the wrong screw. It was a lot longer than the original screw. :headbang:

Had to come home and drill out the old one. It works now.

great, that's always nice to see instead of gouges and rivets!

I've found good brakes make for a more pleasant drive.

No. I left too many skid marks when the shoes were saturated with brake fluid. smilieFordlogo

No more broken noses on the dash board. smilieFordlogo

Did you use synthetic ?

No, I didn't. I just stayed with DOT 3, although the DOT 4 has a higher boiling point, I think. I wasn't sure if DOT 4 was compatible with DOT 3.

From what I can recall, you can't mix different types of fluids.

I remember putting power steering fluid in an aerostar brake reservoir after replacing the brakes. I was, well, not all there. That cost me a tow truck, a new master cylinder, and a flush. The mechanics were pointing at me when I went to pick it up. :redneckbeer:

Don't feel bad Doug, years ago I filled a buddy's radiator with oil...it was dark and the jug was in fact yellow.

FWIW, I always turn drums and rotors, even NIB parts. Same goes with those items that look good when servicing brakes.

And I don't want to be hearing about your skidmarks.
