As long as it runs, it should be one helluva beater...if it doesn't run, get it right before investing in cosmetics.

Doesn't run.. and I'm just saying thats what it could use..

I should have my work cut out for me on getting it drivable. :headbang:

Cough 5.0 cough

No thanks..
Sounds like its the later style. If its a 72 like ya think it is it might have the v6 like mine does. How much did ya pay for it?

It's a I6, not sure what size though.

I got it free... it was my moms ex-stepdad's, and when he died, my aunt inherited his farm, so I asked if I could have it. Cause I knew they probably didnt' wanna work on it, and it was just gonna sit there. (It's already been sitting for 5+ years though)

If I recall right itll be a 258 with a 1bbl carter carb. Make sure ya flush out any old fuel thats in it and go through the carb, also changin the oil, plugs wires, cap and rotor would be good for it. Is it a stick or auto?

alright.. good to know the motor.

I figure I'll start with draining the gas, oil, trans fluid, ect. rebuilding the carb, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and whatever else I find it needs... eventually I'll probably replace the brake lines.

Did you ever get the chebby to start?

Nope.. I tried wiring the coil straight to the battery, with no luck.

I think I may put another set of points in it tomorrow, and try it again. After that, I dunno what to try..

It has new cap, rotor, points, plugs, wires, coil, fuel pump, ect that was put on last summer. Probably ran couple hours with that stuff on there.

But it all got wet, when the hood leaked. I tried to start it the day after a hard rain, and it ran rough... it ran rough everytime I tried it for a few weeks, then it wouldn't hit at all, and still won't :headbang:

Just try cleaning the points first. Hit them with a point file, or a nail file then re gap them.

On the Lumina's and similar chassis, the top "dogbone" mounts come loose with one bolt, then you can tip the motor forward, pin the motor forward using the provided spot on the bottom side of the dogbone, and there is plenty of room to get at the plugs and such on the back of the motor. My old man's Regal has a power steering line leak, the pipe actually rusted through. It is beyond a beater though, so it for the most part has been retired.

Something to watch out for on the Luminas is the rear struts. They tend to seize up when they fail, making a heck of a rough ride. They are easy to replace, but you need to do it before they rip the upper mounts out. Coil packs can be a regular problem as well, not a lot of fun to get to. Otherwise, they are pretty decent cars. My wife's Grand Prix had 227,000 miles on it when she rolled it, and all I did to it was head gaskets, middle coil, and rear struts besides the normal maintenance stuff. Took that motor and put it in the Regal, and it still is going in there, and that car had over 200,000 miles on it, but the odometer quit working (typical for the Regals) but the car went on for at least another 3 years. The first motor went out courtesy of my sister, who does a good job destroying motors by not checking things or doing oil changes. It had a spun bearing...

Alright.. I'll go steal moms nail file :rolling laugh:

If that don't work, I got a couple new sets of points layin' around here somewhere.

I wasn't sure how the motor mount thing worked.. as I said earlier, I haven't had the *privilege* to do it :rolling laugh:

It's really been a pretty good car. my parents always babied it.. it's never been WOT, and it's only seen 70+ a handful of times (I'm talking, MAYBE 10 times..) :wasntme:

Good to know about the struts, It's probably due for new front and rear struts anyway around the 150k mark, I'd say?

I have a cousin, she put well over 250k on a 97ish lumina and never really had any problems at all. She drives the crap out of everything she owns to.

Fronts are actually replacement cartridge type, don't have to replace the whole unit. Seen them go longer than that, depends how worn they are. Do a bounce test, basically push down real hard on the front bumper to see how many thimes it bounces, and then you can get an idea of condition. Best is down then up, but more likely they would go down, up down. Any more than that, they should be replaced.
