Vent window whisteling fix?

When I took my little trip to take my buddy to the hospital last week, I noticed loud whisteling from my vent window (at high speeds of course), which is just getting a lot louder as time goes on.....the little vent handle is pretty loose. How do I tighten this? I looked everywhere in and around that area and can't figure it out for the life of me.

I think that whistle is very common, and probably the biggest reason they stopped putting wing windows on vehicles (which I still think is a mistake).

My driver side wing is actually more quiet when it is open than it is when closed. I usually like to have it open anyway – my preference. That said: new weather strip may help to seal it up and quiet it down.

I wonder how the add-on lock system works to seal them tighter. Anyone?

I dunno how to tear in to one (I assume it's not very difficult) but how's the 'tension' on your vent window handle??? I assume there's just a set screw or a spring or something that can be adjusted.

I haven't figured out how to make mine quiet either. Replaced all rubber and latch and still no fix. I thought about getting a new frame, but I don't know if that will fix the problem or not. It was always said that the latch gets loose and the window isn't tight against the seal so that's why you see many people stick a coin between the frame and latch to tighten back up.

I really like these windows also, but, I did wonder if the add on locks would help...looks like we have an answer on that already.

I couldn't find a d*** thing.....I see two tiny holes with what looks like little screws (without heads) in them, but nothing that can twist those.

My question here is how did that latch get on the window...does it come from LMC or the factory that way?

I don't think this has anything to do with the frame....that little latch is loose and the one on the passenger side is super tight, so no issues there. It's because I use it more, thus it started to loosen a little.

I did the coin trick on my one truck for a little while. I finally made a plate and attachedit where you wedged the coin.

Did you weld or glue something on the little plate? Not that it matters to me, but I can see car show judges using that against me at a car show.

Would love to know how the heck they installed that thing in the first place.

Oh btw, the rubber is pretty much as it was from the factory; brand new.

There is a little pin in the hole that needs to be punch out. I bought a small punch and was able to hammer it out carefully and then grab it with a small needle nose. Then you can put a new latch on and tap the pin back in. There are two different latches and I originally bought an upgrade with the lock button on it, but the pin holes would not line up, so I bought the non-locking one and it went on just fine. I get more noise through the driver side than on the passenger side and I can't tighten the window up any more than it is. But a new latch would help some. I had a lot of noise before I installed a new latch. Looking at your latch though, it looks to be in good shape. Usually the "white" end gets worn down over time which causes the vent to not be as tight and why the coin trick works. I don't know, I still get drips of water in the truck when I wash it through most of my weather stripping and rubber seals around the door and everything is new and I can't see where I would have installed anything wrong. I just think that the design of these old trucks aren't perfect and not meant to be quiet. It would be nice. I know there are one window kits out there for chevy and in time the company that makes them are supposed to make ones for our Gen. 6s, but that has been talked about for the past few years and haven't seen anything yet. I do like the wings though.

You gave the answer before I asked the question. Does the white end wear down causing a loose fit? It always looked like nylon to me, and I could see that wearing over time. I guess this is the case! Thanks, Buck.

On rare occasions, I'll run my truck through an automatic wash (would rather do it by hand, but sometimes a quick auto is in order) and in those washes I'll get water dripping through the seal on the driver's side wing at the bottom. I've taken to holding a bandanna there when the sprayer comes by.

Yeah, the latch is still in good condition, so I'm wondering if that's not the problem. For me though, it'll be worth ordering that little latch from LMC for $16.95 + shipping and see if it'll work.

I'll agree with you.....these trucks were meant to be work trucks, not luxury vehicles, so it is what it is.

Appreciate the help.

It is some kinda plastic.

Niether I made a clip that just snappeed over the chrome where the latch sets against.
It was removable it just covered the entire thing. Couldn't tell is wasnt factory unless you were looking hard.

I think its the bottom hinge pin and its socket that gets bent with all the pulling on the handle that causes it to be miss aligned.I always tell people to push out on the other side (front of wing window) to lock it.

Years ago on another truck , I put black RTV on the rubber seal and some vasoline on the glass. When the RTV got hard I cut off the excess with a razor and cleaned off the vasoline. It stopped the whistle for years.

Good tips!

Edit: I left out that , I closed the wing window into the RTV until it set up.

I think when I bought my latch from LMC, it had Dennis Carpenter labeling. I believe I ordered from them because the price was the same and shipping actually was cheaper than D.C and I get parts faster from them.

Coulda been a good part...coulda been a DC reject. JBG used to source DC new and rejects, and so does LMC.

Ya, It could have been. Looks good and I couldn't find any imperfections, but it's the same with my cowl Badging. They are DC blems and I couldn't find anything wrong with them. But I agree that you take your chances with LMC. If you go through DC directly at least you know what you get.

BTW Ben, my 3 year old son is sitting with me and saw your sig and loves your trucks/Bronco. Now he wants me to go through and show him all the other sig pics from everyone.

That is pretty darn nifty.
