I thought the 460 was available in 79, but it was 80-82 when the 400 was top of the heap??? Ive seen other 794x4's with 460s....

Yes, the 460 was available in 1979, but only for 2WD trucks. I looked up the engine/truck combinations in the 1979 owner's manual that Duncan posted, and the chart in the '79 owner's manual does not list a 460 with a 4WD truck.

If the vehicle was a special order, then the complete order number would be listed under the DSO code, instead of the two digit DSO code.

Lots of '79's with transplanted 460's. It is a popular swap.

That is a very nice truck. However, Ford did not offer a 460 engine on a 4x4 truck in 1979. The VIN indicates the engine is a 460 motor(J), so I'm guessing that a 2WD body (which did come with a 460) was dropped onto a 4WD frame?

However it was done, something doesn't quite match up.

Doug, the door plate says it came with a D44 front and the 460. Although everything I've heard over the years is exactly what you said about no 460's in 4wd trucks.

Also it has no special order DSO.

I didn't see the DSO on the owner's tag in the manual, but I asked the seller to provide the DSO. He hasn't responded yet. I asked him the same question last March when he tried to sell it the first time, and he seemed confused, but insistent that everything was original. Maybe this is in the category of the F-130 mystery?

I don't have my books in front of me...so I can't decode the door plate...but it still has X25 as the first three digits on that same plate, which is SC 250 2by all day long.

I wonder if that isn't one of those 'get your door plate stamped by Marti' and have enough corroborating evidence that's the true plate when you reapply at the DMV??? But I can't believe someone would catch the axle and engine codes, but miss the 3rd digit in the VIN.

All this tech auto talk is getting me excited!

That rig has cruise control too! This is one nice vehicle! Man!

The front tires look warn on the inside. If he wants 20k for this thing, he should at least get a decent pair of shoes for it. Like it a lot!

I would love to see the 350 restored...don't have the cash to do that :(

Ken - I would agree. He's got both a suspension and body lift so it is likely.
