Towing trouble

There is no replacement for displacement

The 78 351M came with 135 HP and very little torque

The 400 came with 160HP

Your best bet is to get a 400 and tweak the engine

Google ..... Ford 400 Performance
Click the broncoproject link
Another site is Bubba's M- block

A guy i know on the internet gets 640 HP out of one

Been a while since I've reviewed Bubba's...last I knew it was archived on wetpaint...looks like it's here now:

Yeah, but they couldn't offer 37 different types of pop(soda for you southerners)

I think Ernie (polarbear) has stated his area still has (might even require) full service stations. IIRC though 'full service' was relegated to an attendant pumping his gas.

That is correct, Ben. Oregon state law requires that an attendant pump your gas for you, and that is ALL you get.

I've got a couple 400 build threads around here that'll cost you less than $1000, bump you to the 275-300hp/350-400 tq and will get you 12-14mpg's highway. Super easy engines to work on. Any kind of head work and headers, expect those numbers to improve.

My Engine is so unmolested ill pry leave it alone untill i HAVE to tear into it....I have a whole stack of recipts in my truck from stuff that has been done to it and the engine had already been rebuilt once back in 1985.

The guy didnt write the mileage down but judgeing by the time period of things when he did write the mileage it was around 50K...it has 102K on it now....

Not exactly sure why it was rebuilt...

^^^Never been a huge fan of low mile unmolested 30 year old engines...gunk forms, seals and gaskets dry out, parts rust...etc. If you feel your truck doesn't have enough balls to get the job done, I'd be interested in compression readings...I'd bet you have a couple double digit readings.

Thats the truth. I put amsoil in everything on mine , now it's all dripping.:headbang:

That's one of the things I'm super worried about with Red...I've put MAYBE 250 miles on her in 2 years...after I get the steering system fixed, I just can't wait to see what else will need repair...I already know the carb is dried out. The Bronco I try to knock out a few hundred a month, but when it's hot out, I can almost see the seals contracting.

It doesnt leak anymore then any other old Ford ive ever had, valve covers and oil pan. Nothing else leaks.

It has plenty of power, i just get impatient and want more. Most people i feel like would be plenty happy with its performance. Empty it actually runs pretty hard its just when you saddle it up with the camper its a lil on the weak side (for my tastes).

It would blow your mind how much power you would gain from a set of full length headers, and duel exhaust. You will also see better gas mileage

In Alberta, CO-OPs still have full service

Rusty CJ Quoted "Yeah, but they couldn't offer 37 different types of pop(soda for you southerners)"

HAHA...Just to set the record straight...I was born from that Canton City town..but retired to the country..hehe We also offerd Coke and Pepsi products up North..lol...In all seriousness tho working the pump islands,we cleaned windshields, checked under the hood, added oil, fluids ect, checked belts, tire pressures,ect..Now if we had a keen eye to spot potential trouble this helped in the garage area as well. Most of the time we were loaded with work of all types..when it got slow,as long we got the daily routines done as well as catering to customers, the Boss would let us work on our own vehicles which i thought was pretty cool of him to do.for this is how i learned more by doing the work itself repetition to build speed and perfection as i was cutting my teeth so to speak.the books i used as guides in study.and the Boss was one hell of a mentor for me.Between him and his older brother who did go through the ASE cerification through Ford, was a Master Mechanic in his day and a mechanical wizzard.I learned from the best there was.My Boss was an excellant Mechanic..his brother was astounding in all fields.this man would pull an automatic trans from a vehicle in 30 minutes tops, tear it apart, clean everthing rebuild the unit, back in the car running and working in about 2 1/2hrs in all honesty.and these were rust belt vehicles i might add.

So a 400 will bolt right up to my c6 and probably can use the same headers + intake and carb as my 351 right?

As long as that's a 351M...yes...only thing different between the two engines are parts of the rotating assembly.
