OK IVE DECIDED WHAT IM GOING TO DO FOR NOW!! later on i WILL build a 393 stroker. there are a few reasons why im only doing this minor build right now. ANN WILL KILL ME WITH THE MONEY I WAS PLANNING ON SPENDING!!! and also i wanna gradually build up to it and once i get to a power/fuel mileage mark im happy with ill stop.
here it is:
MAF SWAP!
Explorer intake from 96/97
GT40 Heads 96/97
Long Tube headers that will fit a lightning (lightnings came with GT40 Heads)
COMP Cams 35-414-3 OR... do yall have a though for a different cam? cause from what i understand this cam makes better power at higher rpms.

and all of this goes already with my Tranny w/shift kit and my new 4.10 rear gears and locker. so this should be a great combo.

now the question is should i upgrade anything like Rockers or Valve springs, lifters etc.
so i know a new timing set will be need. but what setup is good? are all timing sets good?

FYI.. You need a 5.8 GT40 lower for that Explorer upper.

Any F150 longtube will work but the cheap Flowtech and Headman longtubes don't fit too well, have heard the Pacesetter longtubes fit much better.

That's a flat tappet cam and you have a roller motor. There are quite a few suitable roller cams available including the Ford E303 and the Comp cams Magnum 270 and 280, see the attached pic below. The powerband will be below 5000rpm with those heads on a 5.8 so there's no point spooling the motor beyond that. The Magnum270 produces the most TQ of these 3 while the E303 produced the least, the Magnum280 matches the E303 in HP and produces more TQ. You'll need matching valve springs for all of these.

was planning on a aftermarket intake probably. kinda doubtful that id be able to find a lightning lower intake. which cam would you suggest? im leaning towards the magnum 270. and will i have to start buying a higher octane gas?

The Pro Products Typhoon is an Eddy Performer copy and is about equavelent to the GT40 in performance, it's also half the price of the Edelbrock intake but that's because the exterior finish isn't quite as nice. The Magnum 270 would be my choice too for a truck motor.. lots of TQ to get it moving. No need for higher octane fuel here, that's based on engine compression and that won't be much different than a regular motor.

the exterior finish i can fix. just sand down and paint it. flat primer gray. what would the part number be if you dont mind looking? and also thanks for the help on the Cam choice. im just not very good at choosing cams. dont really understand the lift and duration stuff. thats why im reading several engine build books to understand as much bout cams as i can.

That dyno program has taught me a lot about cams clearly demonstrating the difference all those specs make. You can't take the final numbers it pumps out as 100% accurate because there are still a lot of assumptions made, but in general an actual motor built to the same specs would be to withing +/- 10-15%

Here is a link to the intake and these are the guys I bought it from. It's available bare(satin) or polished, I got it in satin and had it powdercoated crinkle black. http://www.blueovalindustries.com/products.php?pid=99013238

Here's a pic of mine...
