rebuilds

best bang for buck mod I did

My 89 F-150 came to me with a 351 AOD. When I had it out to my machinist and told him that it was used for towing and I wanted more power he said he could get a stroker crank for $220, run 302 pistons and up the fuel pressure or run bigger injectors(I did the pressure) and run a Melling RV cam (very mild)and $934 later that truck would MOVE, better than the stock 460 F-250 I have, way better.

how long ago was this? and did your truck have a lope to it after the cam? thats a big thing i want is a real lope. not no retarded timing lope.

I believe that's referred to as a "rumpity rump" cam...YelloThumbUp

That was 2 yrs ago. I had shorty headers, flowmaster y and muff and a 460 cat converter w/3" single exhaust. You could tell there was a cam in there if you really paid attention, but it didn't really lope. I didn't care about sound, just more power. Ran her 3 months, one day going 72 down the freeway a lady pulled out 37 feet before my skid marks, and that was the end of that.

Find a 94+ truck and get MAf setup off it . I can get whole harness airbox tubes ecu Cheap . And long tubes . Will be more peppy then when get $ do what want .

Other than repin of injector harness for your firing order (MAF is sequential ) And tracing wires for /to cab its not bad .

Sounds like you need a come visit Tony n me.....we'll have that motor built in no time heh heh. If you're hellbent on a head swap look at www.thumperoforangepark.com as drago already posted Jay Allen is the MAN when it comes to a custom grind and he's right, the OTS cams are a feneralized curve......there is no vehicle/engine exactly the same with machined tolerances. An alphabet cam is gonna hurt you more than help you......those cams were made for the Mustang/T-bird crowds...a 2800 pound vehicle.......not for a heavy truck like ours. I would definitely go with a custom ground cam if you can budget that but if not...a good RV style came (like what Jurgen has) will be awesome. As for lope...your engine uses ALOT of vacuum to run correctly...they do have lopey cams made just for vacuum controlled vehicles you've just gotta search for em...but i really don't think you'd be happy. I'm always more satisfied when I blow someone's doors off and sound stock. IMO you've got a lope and you're more prone to get messed with...both by light to light racers and the cops.

Chris,

You havetoremember you arepushing a 5k lb brick into the wind and a mismatch of parts can make your truck run like a 3 legged mule in the Kentucky Derby. If your truck has a C6 a MAF swap is easy. I have the notebook on when I done mine and you'll kick yourself in the balls on the simplicity. If you go 302 here is what I would suggest:

302 short block .030 or .040 over
E7 heads freshed up with bowl blending under the valves and Trick Flow valve springs.
Comp Magnum 266HR cam
Roller conversion from Mustang HO engine (ever Ford guy should have one laying around)
MAf conversion
LT headers.

At thenext meet I'll give you a copy of the stuff I have in my notebook.....:wavey:

No prob, I know both have great potential; And your right in a truck the 351 is by far the better choice.
