You can build a 460 for no more money than the 351W. The 460 will wreck the 351W. Torque!

300-350 H.P is simple, and you don't need to go hunting for those GT-40's like used on many mild 351W builds. D3 heads with a good valve job will get you there no problem.

go 351W... can rev like a 302, but has low end torque close to the 300...

the 351 has more torque than the 300 everywhere on the curve.

I'll give the 300 all the longevity awards in the book, but I won't put it up to the 351 in performance. That 351 is one bad motor. I can't wait to hop mine up a little bit.

Love the 351 but at 400 plus mile a week the 3 less MPG than 302 sucks. same with 460 the 6+ MPG sucks

Cliff...I'd think loooooong and hard about keeping the 300/6, next choice would be a 351W. Both good engines for a half ton platform, kinda opposite ends of the spectrum, just have to decide which end makes more sense for you.

I have Ben. I have been doing a lot of reading on Ford Six Performance it's a lot of work and $$$$ to get a 300 to the 200-300 HP range. It's a bit easier without the EFI because you can use 240 heads along with 2 or 4 bbl set ups. I can build for economy easier. Since I don't drive it everyday I figure to have some fun with it.

Any particular reason why you're aiming for the 2-300 hp range? I'm no expert on the power numbers, but I'd bet you could damn near just drop in a 351 and be in that range. So yeah, that makes sense...but for ease of swap, I'd find a 351 truck of the same vintage and swap everything so the rig will still be compliant.
