I say it isn't worth it because I have a working mechanical fan.

It's not even a clutch fan, it's fixed. I'm probably losing 50hp with it, but quite frankly Skan, I don't give a damn. :rofl2:

Why bother? What do you really need 10 extra horse power for anyway?
It also gave my gas mileage a slight bump. Also opened up tons of room in my engine compartment-- makes it incredibly easy to work on the front end of my engine. It also allows me to blow icy-cold A/C while idling in a parking spot. Would also allow me to drive through deeper water if I were a off-road kinda guy.

There are plenty of perks involved with the e-fan.

I have no problem agreeing with your arguments, Bob, so long as you can cite some evidence for your claims.

How about your claim that your e-fan only runs 5% of the time? The mechanical fan/clutch will see the same heat load, and the clutch will respond accordingly!!

I get fine gas milage outta my truck. My truck already has plenty of room under the hood. I don't have a/c nor do I drive through deep water.

I'm glad you like yours though.

A slight bump!! That was scientific!!!! If it was a substantial increase in MPG, you would be bragging about it!!!

I know what a placebo effect is, I'm not a moron. The efan has noticeable and measurable results. Period. If you can make a compelling argument that 13-14 additional horsepower is a complete waste of time, then by all means, please do.

My argument is, all I gotta do is add one of those Tornados and tighten my carb belt...and I'll get the same results...hahahaha.

Well it made more than two pages but I don't see it lasting much longer! HAHAHA

Can I finally say you lose now??????? Ya dink.

But the nature of the fluid clutch promotes wear at a faster rate. Over time, and old clutch will begin to drag more than it did when it was new; this is the claim that you've continued to perpetuate by saying that a bad fan clutch will just lock up and over-cool the engine, as opposed to overheating it. Why would a bad fan lock up? Because the fluid clutch has lost it's ability to slip, over time, and created more drag until it can finally slip no more. I have no doubt that a brand new clutch fan is pretty damned efficient, but I can guarantee that my old mech. fan was at least halfway locked WAY more than 5% of the time, I could hear the damn thing pushing air when it didn't need to be.

Again Bob-- if you can cite a specific source that shows a mechanical clutch fan (for the entire lifespan of that part) to be completely free-wheeling for more than 95% of normal driving conditions, then I'll place a little more credibility in your claims.

It wasn't a substantial increase in MPG... It was a "slight bump"... Hence why I'm not bragging about it.

Yeah, well, just to stir the pot and play both sides a little, when the e-fan is off it is basically neutral, while when the clitch is freewheeling, it doesn't have exactly zero drag. It's still robbing some amount of power...

You should have changed your fan clutch!!! If the bearing in the clutch seizes, it will be locked up!!!

Obviously is you only got a "slight bump" im MPG, even a half way locked up fan clutch wasn't affecting your MPG that much!! If your fan clutch was operating ok, you wouldn't have
even seen that "slight bump" in MPG going to the e-fan!!!!

Precisely. That's somewhat unrelated the claim that Bob is making right now, but it is something that we've discussed in the past. A mechanical clutch fan is never fully disengaged.

Here is my take on the whole thing....

You have to look at overall HP like a big puzzle! When you put one little piece of the puzzle on the board you don't see the big picture, but start adding a few more pieces and it starts to look like something.

Same goes for the truck. If you add 5hp here, 3 hp there, 10 hp there, guess what it starts adding up. When we were into truck pulling, we had to look at it that way.

So whether you feel/get the 10-13hp or not, even if you only gain 1 mpg you save some money.

I have done alot of stuff to my motor that adds anywhere from 1 to 15hp at a time, well now that the puzzle is almost put together I can really tell a difference from stock.

And as soon as I install that new clutch, it begins it's downhill journey once again, until a few years later it has already lost a substantial amount of it's rated efficiency and I need to install a new one to maintain optimum efficiency. No thanks.

How ironically philosophical. Thank you for that. :rofl2:

yeah but I'd of locked it a while back. Just don't have power! LOL

Oh and my wife had a tornado in her truck when we bought it. I took it out and noticed a 2 mpg GAIN over what it was getting. NO LIE!
