Grease or no Grease on Pilot Bearing?

1989 F150 extened cab 4.9 4WD M 50 D. I put a new pilot bearing in 1200 miles ago and it is totally munched. I didn't grease it because I feared grease on the flywheel and then clutch issues. The new Pilot bearing seems to have a nylon seal/ring. I greased it lightly. Am I looking for trouble?

I generally put a little grease in, but not too much.

Did what Fellro and Smokey said. "A little bit of grease, but not too much." Now I am going to try and coax the Trans AND Transfer case back up as one unit??? It came out as one piece, but I think going back up will be more of a challenge. I think I'll wait till Sunday when I can get some help.

I really appreciate all your advice. You guys ROCK!

Since I rarely have help, I always split the trans and case, too much to wrestle with when you already have the challenge of getting the input shaft to line up to the splines in the clutch disc and the lineup on the pilot bearing. Having the t-case throw the weight off just makes it that much harder. 6 bolts and it is off.

In my own world
don't forget to put a new gasket back between them

I seperated the Trans and Transfrer case. Installed the Trans and crossmember tonight. The Transfer case is in the minivan so I can get a new Gasket from the trans shop. Thats where I got the last one. BTW, I don't know how you guys pull Transmissions, but since I don't have a transmission jack, I put the boom of my engine hoist through the passenger door and attach it to a chain I have wrapped around the trans. The Chain provides some manuvering and flexibility. The only down side is having to get out from under to adjust the hoist. A second person on the hoist makes the operation go AMAZINGLY quickly.

Thanks again for all the advice. Trying to finish before the next cold front.

I have made mounts that go on a floor jack to be able to support the trans and move it around better. I have transmission jacks now, which are way handier. Some rental places have them for rent as well.

Thanks again for the support. Tested the new Pilot bearing on Sunday. put 110 miles on it the last two days without a glitch. I did notice when I removed the trans the shaft had seen some goring by the old Pilot bearing. I polished up the scratches with some 320 grit and cleaned it up. I was EXTRA careful reinstalling it this time. I wanted NO damage to the new bearing. I suspect the old Pilot bearing was grabbing and spinning the trans shaft and preventing me from putting it into gear with the engine running. So far the Clutch Master is behaving. I'm keeping the fingers crossed. I got it done before the weather went to crap. Even managed to sneak a new timing belt into my son's old Volvo 240 Wagon. It's a total "Chick Magnet"

Thanks again, Joe

If the input was galled, it definitely will do as you are thinking, spin over with the crankshaft and cause hard shifting.
