My truck has a single tank on it, had a 16 gal. but like you mentioned i got tired of filling up so much , swapped it for a 32 gal bronco tank. now I only fill up 1.5 times a week.

My gut says take the vin number down to the DMV and have them run it for you.
smilieIagree I'd have them run the plates first, and see if the reg matches the VIN.

I have a little different take on what I think happened here. Truck was stolen, totalled, and paid off to the original owner. Owner doesn't want it back- he's already been paid off. Insurance Co might have an interest, but not if they don't know it's been found.

Edit: that thing has one hell of a value to a scap yard.

Mine was 16 Chris, never put more than 15 in it, remember I put a Bronco tank in mine. Now holds 32 gal.
I typically fill up when I've got about 1/4 tank left (according to the gauge) and it takes about 15 gallons.

1.25 * 15 = 18.75

My '89 F-150 has the single tank. All the regular cab shortbed 4x4's had just one tank. Since that's how Chris's truck started life, that's what he has although there is plenty of room under there for another tank.

And yeah, it's a PITA. Especially on long trips. REALLY inconvenient when towing.

I don't know if the guy will let you pull off parts without buying it, but ask what he wants for the front two fenders (assuming there's no rust peeking through). I could use BOTH of them in my climate.

My '89 F150 4x4 reg cab short bed had two tanks. I'll get the window sticker and see if that was an option.

My 94 F150 2wd single cab short bed had dual tanks. Brad, I think the reason the 4wd one's didn't have the front tank is because there wasn't enough room to squeeze it in with the tcase in the way. I'd be interested to know how the squeezed it in on your 89...

Does the t-case come that far back? Dang... Never thought about it, though.

Only trucks of that vintage I've been under, were a 2wd extended cab (SB), and a 4x4 crew cab (LB). Both had dual tanks, but also are longer than a single-cab SB

They put the t-case in the same location for both the SWB and the LWB trucks, I'm betting it's because it's a short bed and there was less room between the axle and the front of the bed because the one in my '93 fills that space fully...:wavey:

EDIT: Ian beat me to it...

Our theories are one of the same.

With a tcase in the way you're eating xx inches at the front of the bed for space for another tank, whether it's a longbed or a shortbed. In a longbed, all the stuff at the rear (rear tank, rear axle, spare tire, rear springs, etc etc) are all moved back which compensates for the lost space from the tcase. On a shortbed, there just ain't enough room to squeeze the front tank between the axle and the tcase.

Thats just a guess by the way ;)
