I need a little help here.I Have my 360 in my truck runs decent.

My Wife said I could get any engine I wanted. So I have been thinking about a 300 6,390,or a 460.

I dont see the poll (yet...) but my vote goes to the 4.9L, 300cubic inch, inline six cylinder of glory. :D

Clifford Performance is a great Inline 6 performance parts site, I drool over their stuff alot.

IMO, it depends on what you want out of it.

A 300 would be the most economical and with the right gears will do any work that the others would - but who owns a full size truck for economy?

A 390 would be "right", but does that really matter?

A 460 would be sweet, but do you want a truck that gets maybe 10 mpg?

It's all about what you want out of it.

Why not leave the 360 in it until it's no longer any good?

Daily driver no heavy hauling, but some light hauling now and then.

Im no authority, but here is how I see it:

300-6: Economical, with correct gears, can do anything. But as stated earlier, who owns these for economy?

390: Correct for the truck, loads of power, but there arent as many parts out there for them as the other options.

460: Awesome power, lots of parts, the ability to say, "Yep, its a 460!", easy to install, but its a half ton, so thats gunna put a lot of stress on that 9".

Other: 400? :)

My vote went to the 390. This is the easiest because you already have the block, motor mounts, brackets, ect. And I like the 390 in my red truck.

My rear gear is a 3.00 which is good for economy that is why I threw in the 300 I6 and the truck is a driver,so no work will be done with it.

The 300-6 is really in its comfort zone with 3.55 or 3.73 rear gears. It puts the RPMs right at the bottom of the powerband while still being economical and supporting the low end torque. :)

Sounds like a slow take off. It would probably do ok, but it would take a while to get up to speed. 4 speed or auto? or 3 on the tree?

So you don't "know" that its a 360? Measure the stroke, 3.50"=360, 3.78"=390.
I'm also gonna vote for a 390, I love the one in my 67 and use it as a daily driver. It makes GOBS of torque, and has never let me down. However it does pull down around 10-12mpg depending on how much the secondaries are open :D

Edit, I'd also vote for running whatever you end up having in there untill it needs swapped...

I'm going to drive it until I build a new engine.

390 just cause it was a legendary Ford motor. Stock they were pretty bad assed in the day.

Yeah but with gas prices going up everyday again,A 390 is going to suck gas down like water.

Well if you bought a Ford for gas mileage, then heres your sign.

On edit none of your engine choices are going to set the Obama administration on fire for carbon footprint. Especially if you hop them up at all. Stick with the 390 for nothing else than the cool factor. And don't forget to run diesel oil in it if you run a flat tappet cam.
