4WD makes nasty CKUNK

1989 "mostly blue" F150 extended cab 4.9, M50d Trans, BW 13-56 Transfer Case, "Automatic Hubs". tires new same size. Goes into 4WD HI & LOW fine. Comes out into 2WD fine initially, but seems to make a real nasty CLUNK as if trying to re ingage 4WD /drive shaft/ locking hub again. I was told by a local this could be a locking hub issue. I can't find an alleged control modual on the fire wall or floor board of the passenger side as the guy indicated it would be. If this could be a transfer case issue, I would like to look into it while it is out. The tranmission and tansfer case is out right now. Installing new clutch, slave cylinder & seals.

My first post. Any ideas

the 4x4 solenoid is on the firewall, pass side, under the cowl. There is a electrical plug on top, and 2 vacuum lines under it. The solenoid is bad for water intrusion into it causing 4x4 issues, Theres a replacement solenoid that comes with a "cover", You probably will have to change the iwe actuators as well.UH, just saw the year of your truck..............nevermind!

Can you hear where the noise is coming from? Up at the front wheels or more below the cab where the tcase is?

The auto hubs are garbage-- they left me stranded in a snow storm. My first inclination is to blame the hubs. I advise you to replace them with manuals before they leave you stranded like they did to me.
