I am going to look at a running 460 Friday with a C6 trans. It has a carb anf my truck has a 300 I6 EFI 4 speed. What do I need to make this a good swap?
If the engine and tranny are going in...motor mounts and towers, probably some cross member ingenuity...and your dshaft will need some work. I'd also think the springs up front would probably need some reinforcing. Those are the things just off the top of my head.
i didn't do the swap, but i had an 85 with a 300 4spd to 460 c-6 swap. as far as i know the 300 towers work with swap mounts, but idk for sure. and i still had my factory 3 peddle set up. you might need to retro fit an earlier speedometer in you cluster to hook up the old style speedo line because i think your truck has a vehicle speed sensor deal, but i don't know much about late 80's fords. you can either notch the crossmember to put the oil filter in the stock location, or buy a remote filter kit. you might wanna check into a cheap floor mounted shifter to cover the old 4spd hole and keep your column. as to getting the motor running, you could go super simple and use an old points distributor which would eliminate almost all wiring, but that is kind of old school tech. i would model your ignition setup after a 78-79 ford truck. you should have a factory duraspark distributor, same as a 351m/400, and just find a wiring diagram for that setup. hope this helped a little.
don't forget that you also have to get a fuel pressure regulator, or switch to an older tank or older take inerds. efi has too much pressure for a carb.
no problem. i'm sure someone with a little more familiarity with late 80's trucks will come along to clear up the parts i'm unsure of. never owned a bricknose, not a big fan of the front end.
cool. as you know this swap has been done a brazilion times on every make and model of ford truck and a lot of the cars. so i'm sure if anything pops up you can find someone here or somewhere else on the net that has had the same issue. good luck and i hope it all goes well for you.
well thank you. this will be about the only forum i'm on that uses the rep system. i'll be sure to get myself familiar with it and spead the wealth![]()
LOTS I'm afraid especially if it has EFI ?
If you are going to Carb it fine if you want to RUN EFI you will need scads of things
Can engine perches from a late 60's-early 70's F100 work in my 88?
