I'm going to say you're on the right track with the .45. Of course in the spirit of Texas, I shouldn't be suggesting a smaller round, but I bought a Taurus 851 .38sp +p. It has a 2 inch barrel with 5 rounds. It's a very compact package and is designed for concealing. It's a good one if you're not wearing the trench coat in the texas summer....

get a little .460 S&W. You can shoot .460s for bear hunting along with .45 colt and .454 casulls...
