will this hurt the transfer case???

a friend told me i could pull the front diveline and put the transfer case into hi lock and then run it as a two wheel drive. if i did that would it hurt the transfer case in anyway? wouldn't be highway driving it or going over 40. maybe only 75 miles on it. would only do it until i got the conversion kit done and then manual locking hubs

It's not good for it. Unless there is some problem there's no reason not to let it run in full time 4wd like its designed to.

I take it you have a 203 transfer case?

Considering the only damage you can do to a transfer case when engaged in 4wd involves the front axle, having it disconnected will not cause any binding. So no, it will not hurt it at all.

I guess I am thinking part time cases. If it is full time, you pretty much have to engage the 4wd to get it to move. My ex-father in law had a full time Blazer, and at the time never had exposure to full time tranfer cases. I unlocked the hubs. It would not move unless I engaged it in 4wd. Didn't hurt it, just defeated the purpose of having lockouts. Still it should not cause any issues as it is not going to bind or carry any load.

yes its the 203. if it will hurt it i won't worrry about it. snow will be here in 2 months anyway.

the gas is horrible right now don't have a clue why. other than it being full time 4wd, a 360, big tires with stock gears, and hardly any exhaust. it should stilll get better than 2-4 though. especially when i don't go fast often or run it at high rpm. its not currently street legal, registered, or licensed yet so its not usually out on the highways.

The only vehicle I've ever really been around with a 203 was an old chevy pickup, but with the 350 it would get 10mpg. So its possible with the full time 4wd. I think you have other problems.

Hell my blazer gets better than that. Its got a big block, 8" lift and 38s.

You have carb trouble us my guess. Ir your ignition aint igniting. Check what color your plugs are, i would bet blaaaaack.

They make a kit to turn the 203 into 4wd/2wd. Its fairly simple to install and its faily inexpensive. Then u need unlockable hubs. All together i think you can convert under 150 dollars.

To be honest the 203 case doesnt rob that much miliage. Maybe a couple mpgs probably wont get any gain at 2-4 mpg. Most likely something else is very wrong

I would check out the compression. I think you can turn the timing up a bit over stock on these as well. Check for vacuum leaks, my 75 liked those... Vacuum leaks kill your mileage well but still allow it to run.

Plus are red orange and one was white.
Compression is 120-125
There's 3 vacuum lines on the carb it's missing all the others
Just rebuilt the carb it's set at a low idle and its 1.5 to 1.75 turns out on the mixture screws
Timing is set to 8
It has an entire tune up done the only fluids that haven't been change are axles and transfer case
I put mystery oil in the engine oil and some in the gas when I rebuilt that carb that helped the engine some

Something aint right though.. Should be getting better than 4 Mpgs... Did you plug missing vacuum lines?

Plugge all the lines and while I was out I extended the tie rod end so its a little better aligned and greased up the front end. Runs the same maybe a little better with everything plugged goin to drive it for a bit and see what the gas is like

Pull the front shaft, lock it in 4 hi. You are not going to hurt the t-case. I did the same thing to mamas 02 Explorer when it shat the front drive shaft cv joint joint.

How do you know what the mpgs are? You have stock gears, big tires, and it sounds like it isn`t tip top. I understand wanting to get the most mileage you can, but this truck aint it. If you need better, probably ought to sell it and buy a Ranger.

Bump your initial timing up to 12 or 14*.

ran it out of gas threw in 4 a little over 4 gallons drove it 13 miles and it ran out again

i want 10 out of it at least. my dads truck gets 12 and he has stock gears and big tires and a 390.

Correct the speedo or get a gps, make it run tip top, THAN report back with a mileage quote. Everybody here wants to help you, even me.

But keep in mind, 360`s are low horsepower/torque engines. They are working pretty hard to motivate things along. About 8 or 9 years ago I was driving a 68 F-350 dually every day that was a 360/4-speed, 3.73 geared truck. It averaged 11 hauling scrap (once as much as 11,000 lbs payload), and driving around. My friend was so impressed he found another that was identical but with 4.10s. He got the same mileage, he just couldn`t go as fast.
