Why do diesel engines require coolant additives?
So they can charge us more money? Why do diesel engines require coolant additives?
There is a process called "cavitation" that eats through the cylinder walls in a diesel. Read this article, it explains it quite well:

It used to be that you didn't need to be a chemist, engineer, computer wizard, or a customer relations specialist to be a mechanic! Now, we be called techs! That's it!
I guess I asked as a reminder to those who do not find it necessary, as I have a 6.0 in the shop right now with holes in one cylinder...
Try to maintain your gold motorcraft coolant. Its formulation is hard to beat.Question@Vince
Ok THAT was an interesting read. I had NO idea, whatsoever that I needed an additive for my coolant. What kind of coolant, or coolant additive would you recommend for my 6.0?

The thoughts are 50k. Ford originally uses distilled water, when using tap water, the interval is cut in half. How often should the Gold coolant be replaced? I think I read somewhere....3 years, does that sound right?
Except in the case of Tap Water here at the lake when it's cut in 1/8th!! Our water is so hard, it'll solidify in a cup overnight!!when using tap water, the interval is cut in half.
