Whats the difference between a F-250/F-350/F-450/F-550?

I know you can't get DRW with a F-250, but why not? You can get a F-350 SRW

And a F-550 can tow more, but it looks to be the same truck as the F-350?

Are the frames stronger, or what? :suspicious:

I'v always wondered, but never thought to ask till now..

I think it's in the suspension, kinda like my F100 having 4 leafs in the rear, and the F150 having 5 leafs.I agree with ya though man.F550's look alot like the others. They do seem to sit a little higher which is why I think the suspension is different. The difference might also be in payload.

I think it may be just springs...the whole dually rear wheels is for the heavy duty truck class.....the f250 is just a medium duty truck...as for the others I think it may be a little more fram support once you get past the 350's as well as stiffer spring packs.

Most of the 450's and up I have seen sport 19.5 rims, while the 350 down have smaller wheels. It is about the frame and suspension mostly, and GVW. For actual classification, 450's up are considered medium duty, while 350 and down are light duty. Most medium duty trucks have a GVW of around 26,000 if I'm not mistaken, which gets them into CDL territory.

IIRC, F-350s have 31 spline rear axles, while F-250s have 29 spline, too...but since I don't own either, I can't swear to that.

Interesting..

I always figured they had different suspensions under them, and maybe some extra frame support, but that's about it..

Guess I thought wrong.. :slap:

GVW is the easiest seen difference. I don't know the F250 gvw but some come without overload springs depending on what packages they were ordered with. My F350 srw has a gvw of 11600 lbs and has a sterling 10.5 rear axle. My F450 drw has a GVW of 16000 and a dana s110L rear axle in it. At my job we have 2 F550s with a gvw of 23000lbs and they have dana 135 axles in the rear.

Trying to remember all this off the top of my head, but I think I am close on the gvw and axles.

GVW is the biggest difference.

Duallys have a Dana rear axles whereas the SRW versions have a sterling 10.5" rear.

F250s have "thinner" rear springs and a 2.5" block where the 350 has a 3" block.

There are many many others but these are the larger ones.

There's a really fuzzy line between the F250/F350 Series. The 350 actually has a factory lift to make it appear beefier than the 250, but depending on other equipment, they can functionally be considered the same truck (except the dually).

The 450- on up have a different frame, as the biggest difference, along with the expected chassis upgrades These are a halfway step between a 1 Ton and a business class medium duty like a Freightliner. The 650 is the final step- that's where a CAT comes into play, along with other powertrain options.

You see a lot of 450's and 550's on job sites because of tax codes- they're still considered commercial vehicles for tax purposes.
