I have a1985 XL 150 short bed stepside, never been wrecked, no dents (no paint either) and 77,000 miles. It has a 300 six and one of the crummy 4 speed manuals (4th gear over drive) and tachs 1200 rpm`s at 65 mph so it has most of the miles in 3rd gear. My wife will be driving it soon so I need to put in an auto trans. (c4 or c6) but need to know if the 300 has it`s own bell housing or will a small block trans. bolt up to the 300 and if it will what do I need to look for. Thank you

I'm pretty sure a c6 from a 302 or 351 will fit the 300...

any C6 from a 300, 302, 351W will work.. and they are very plentiful.. you'll have no issue finding one.

Welcome to the site The trans. in my truck is the t-18 with bo-low ! No over drive here, try having the tach read at 2700 rpm's at 65mph !! yes, the rear end has 4.56's to boot. This OldOrange250 was never meant for the highway...
Post some pictures of your truck for us FTF I'm really considering doing a swap too, but with a 5-speed manual.

Thanks for the answer, this is a fantastic site but i only found it yesterday. Ten years ago Nevada was full of old Fords but I guess cash for clunkers got them. Mine has the power windows, power door locks and every thing works but the cruise control but never could use it with the "shift up shift down" 4 speed. O`well, itseemed like a winner at the time. Thanks again for the answers
