I can't say for sure, I have a 77 with that combo though. I would be surprised to find that to be true, as they used them up to 82... just don't know on that particular package myself.

I have it in the back of my mind that you couldn't get a 400 in combination with a manual of any kind. I can't verify that in any brochure, but (blush) I remember that being in one of the Chevy Blazer vs. Bronco sales comparisons.

I have that comparison book and another buyers guide. I'll check in the morning but I would think you could get the stick with a 400.

For some reason, I somehow remember both Chebbie and Ford did not offer manuals with their 400's. In Chevy's case, it was because the SBC 400 was insanely fragile, and engineering feared they could grenade too easily with a manual.

Chebbie's argument was we offered a 350 with more HP than Ford's 400 if a customer insisted on a manual.

Why would they not have them for a 400 ?

The 400 has the same bolt pattern as the 351M and the 400 has more torque.

It would be foolish NOT to have a 400 4 M/T available.

The engines available were a 300, 302 (Choke),351M,400

Besides the 300 which one would you choose ?

I have it from a reliable source, that Ford produced a 400 engine/4 speed combination from the factory.I own just such a truck. It is a 1978 F250 with those very componets. It is all Ford original.

It didn't make any sense to me why a 400 wouldn't have a M/T. My son had this truck before me. He pulled the tired 351M from it and installed a 400 he picked up somewhere.
Automatics were still considered optional back then weren't they? I emailed Ford and, depending on response time, will know what my truck originally had off the factory floor.smilieFordlogo

Uh huh...

Exactly how many 1973/79 F100/350 4WD's had factory installed 460 engines?

N-O-N-E = NONE!

Ford did not offer a 460 with 4WD until 1983 and then...only in F350's.

Ford did not offer an F100 or F150 after 1979 with a 460 engine.

In fact, Ford did not even offer 460 engines in any 1980/82's...except in Econolines.

No 460 engines in passenger cars after 1978.

1977/79 F100/350's with 351M's and 400's were both available with 4 speed transmissions and the C6, which was an option.

:rotz: (sigh) I'm all "choked" up Dennis, because...

The ONLY 4WD Ford vehicle available with a 302 engine prior to 1980 were 1969/77 Bronco's.

And...Ford did not offer a 4 speed manual transmission with the 302 engine prior to 1980....except in passenger cars/Ranchero's.

btw: Ford did not offer 351M/400/460 engines or 4WD in any 1980/83 F100's. The largest engine available in 1980/83 F100's was the 302.

So what's the concensus? There are several responses. A 78 F250 with 400 and 4 speed 2wd did or did not come from the factory that way even as an option.

It did come with it.

Well that's good news...oddly enough, I haven't gotten a call back from Ford yet...and I sent my requests in about 3 weeks ago.
