7. And last but not least a 2002 Explorer that belong to a friend of one my dads coworkers All I know about it is that it has a Rebuilt transmission and a New engine that was just replaced under warranty...

Price cap is set around 4500, and I would like something that has 4 doors and preferably 4x4...

I voted 6, mom had an '00 X about the same as that one and I had a '96 with the 4.0, the 5.0 did better on mileage, and power, and towing compared to the 4.0...

Only thing that worries me is its got 142k on the clock, I think its gonna be needing some TLC in the near future; And what ever we get will have to last for a long wile... (cant end up in the yard)

If it was taken care of properly then the miles aren't that much of an issue...

I guess my point is, with the Ford Explorer/Merc Mountaineer the 4.0 isn't the way to go as the V8 gets better MPG... Not sure of the Jeeps with the 4.7 vs the 4.0 though...

No on any Grand Cherokee, especially with a ton of miles on it. They were as unreliable as the old square Cherokee was bombproof. I would be looking for a Cherokee (not a Grand) if the miles/condition was right. Eric's right on the 5.0 vs. the 4.0 in that size/weight truck. I'm also assuming the other listings had a boatload of miles on them, since the miles weren't listed in the ad.

The best of the group is a 'Yota 4Runner, IMO, but it'll be tough to find one with less than a gazillion miles on it in this price range.

Even on a 4.0??

Yep- the motor's not the problem. The 5.2 and 5.9 V8's are rock solid in the Grand as well- it's the rest of the truck you have to worry about as the years and miles roll on.

In the land of Jeeps, give me a Wrangler (pre-V6), and old body Cherokee, or pass. The rest were just Chrysler's.

I said 6 because nothing beats cubic inches!

Lookinf for e a DD big enough to haul 3-4 people, prefer 4 doors and 4x4; It might see Mild offroad once or twice every couple of months..

Something like Josh's rig would be perfect, but damned if I can find one like it... Thats not a Jeep.....

'92-'96 F150 Supercab 4X4? $4500 should buy a really nice one. With a bench or 40/20/40 seat, three sit across in front very comfortably. And there's always a big Bronco.

Just buy the one that looks like mine and convert it to 4x4. :D

Or, I have a decent 95 F150 supercab 351W 4x4 that I would let go for less than your max budget...

Yeah, a fsb is out this will be her DD, Shes had a sport and a sportrac before..

I've been unimpressed with my mother's 5.0 explorer and any others I've been around...so I'd throw those out immediately. I like the Grand Cherokee...but every one I've ever known of, has serious electrical issues. So I don't think I'd choose any of what was listed. I'm also not a fan of the Durangos...the whole damn thing just feels cheap and if I ever shut the door too hard the whole damn thing will fall apart...but no issues with the drivetrain. I'm with Ernie on the regular Cherokees...absolutely bomb proof. Is she specifically looking for a mid-size SUV? If not, I'd probably look at late-90's burbs or expy's. But out of what's listed, I'd go GC.

Ya know- you didn't mention that part of it. That changes the metric a bit- what does she want to drive?

My bad,

She likes the 2nd gen explorer body style. (Has to be "swoopy" No "bricks") her favorite was the '98 sport she had..
