You sure the third pic isn't of a 2WD? Pretty sure it is.

Its either or, my brothers had a 98 XLT V8 with fulltime AWD, so he had no shift knob

i have the selector with auto, 4hi, and 4lo, like the top picture, i just cant believe that It is normally locked in 4wd in normal driving conditions, it makes no sense to me, but maybe.

I get a horrible vibration at 35-40 mph which led me to check things out and i found the front drive spinning.

so this is normal for these types of vehicles?

what the hell does the auto function do then?

even more confused now then I was last week

thanks for all the help
John

Vibrating isn't normal....

One thing I found out driving my friends 97 with the control trac 4wd or whatever its called, when the back wheel slips you can feel the 4wd clunk into engagement... if you really think you are stuck, go find a wet road or a pile of leaves and just poke the throttle enough to get the back wheels to slip, and if everything is working as it should, 4wd should clunk right in....

woah.. gotta shift lever in the floor also? wtf?

I'm going to assume he put a 4406 transfer case in, and didn't change the radio bezel from stock.
