1994 F150; 4.9L; automatic. Front gas tank pumps but does not register on guage; rear tank does not pump but does register on guage.
Cranked up this morning to go to the grocery store. Temperature 31 degrees. Noticed when I cranked that gas guage needle went past Full although the guage never works with the front tank. Drove a couple of minutes at about 45mph and heard a ticking like a stuck lifter or valve and the gas guage dropped back down to just above empty soon as the ticking started. There is plenty of gas in the tank. All guages reading normal (except gas guage). Ticking appeared to be related to truck speed, not engine revolutions. Got to the grocery store a short distance away and checked oil and to see if there was anything loose that might be blowing in the wind. All is normal. Got my groceries and drove truck back home with ticking going on and gas guage showing empty as it normally is. No smoke, no bad smell.
I assume there is some electrical issue because of the one-time strange action of the gas guage.
Anyone have a clue about what would cause this ticking and why the gas guage would spike?? Thanks.
