Solved the 360-390 ?

Tony came over today and we solved the 360-390? I have a 390 under the hood. Which is great.Now all I need to figure out what year it is.
 
What's the giveaway, Cliff?

yeah I got a wooden dowel and he removed a plug then marked it up and down it came out to 3.78 inches

I'm sure there are a ton of people who think that they have 390's but don't. Kind of the 351m 400 debacle.

Yeah Lee I just knew it was a 360. Now for some fun with it.:devil:
 
The thing I hate about the 360 is how the piston doesn't come to the top of the cylinder. The design, as told to me, was to improve 'flame travel' to improve emissions. (the same damn thing they did to the 351M btw) How come the 390 piston comes all of the way to the top?

Yeah We were surprised at how far the piston came up Almost broke my dowel rod.
 
I just re-read my post....What I meant was, if the piston of a 360 is held down below the top of the block for emission purposes, why is it OK for the 390 piston to come all of the way to the top? It makes no sense to me... It also makes a 360 a gas eating dog.

They did a lot of experimenting with engines then. But you are right about the 360 being a gas hog.The guy at the machine shop told me that he has a lot of customers to change their 360 into 390
