removing windshield trim

hello all

i have a 74 f100 i will be painting myself with a $18.00 hvlp spraying john deere blitz black. more than likely i will regret doing this, the truck looks decent from a distance but when you get within 10 ft you will notice the several different shades of orange and a peeling clear coat all courtesy of the previous owner. so i figure i couldn't do any worse than he did :blah:

i am leaving all glass in but am having trouble with front windshield, i would like to be able to slide a rope between the weatherstrip and the cab to keep paint from building up around windshield weatherstrip. like in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx7f9yB8tRU

the problem: the wide steel trim around windshield will not allow this.

my question: if i am able to remove the trim will my windshield stay in place? in other words is the trim just for looks or does it serve a purpose

if i do remove it i will have to keep it like this because i will not be removing glass for quite some time

thank you :wavey:

this is my first post even though it says i have made 18 :suspicious:

The trim is for beauty appearance...it is removable with a proper tool so it is not damaged .it is held on by clips that are attached to rivets along the perimiter of the windshield...although some do,I dont recomend using a screwdriver to remove the trim....a Stout putty knife may also work in removal...The windshield is not affected by removal....unless you slip or pry against it and make contact with it.

Makes it so easy... You could do it with a pick I guess...It is a windshield trim tool, available at most part stores and many other locations. This image borrowed from Eastwood Company.

Buzz , they didn't start using those clips until the '80's. That trim has a curled lip on its back side that fits into a groove in the rubber and is inserted before the glass and wont come out easily. Maybe with out destroying it.
The windshield company I hired broke the first windshield installing the glass with that trim.

thank you all for responding

since its just for looks i will attempt to remove it, if i think im going to damage it i will stop.

of course my windshield will probably explode on me while trying to remove it

if it aint broke, dont fix it :headbang:

thanks again

Still Da Man
I use the bottle cap remover end of a combo can and bottle opener (ie: Not the pointy end)

Thanks Mark for the clarification....I appologize for the error, must have confused it with a layin type...Now that you mention it...I also broke one long ago trying to install with a rope and soap sollution

well i got it off, it was just glued on with what looks like gorilla glue but could have been that yellow 3m weatherstrip glue.

i am the third owner of the truck, a doctor bought it new in 1974 when he died in 1995 his children sold the truck to the guy i bought it off of so im pretty sure i know who glued it.

thank you all again. i cant believe Mil1ion responded to one of my threads i feel special hes famous
