Power Steering Pump Removal

I need to take out my PS pump tomorrow to figure out why it's leaking.

I know I need to remove the pulley and then the bolts that hold it to the bracket (3 of them I think?) I think the pulley is held on with a torx bolt or something... Do I need special tools or should I just wrench on the torx bolt with the belt on and hope that it doesnt slip?

You need to get a power steering pump pully puller. Works wonders and i ended up just buying it off autozone.

Here...you can "rent" a puller from O'reilly auto parts. By "renting" I mean you pay more than the tool is worth as a deposit, but you get it all back when you return the tool.

I have "rented" some tools there without buying parts. The assistant manager knows my 56 and knows I work on it myself. Don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Also do you have an idea of where it is leaking? If your pump is shot i recommend going with a Saginaw Power Steering Pump upgrade. Pump is like 70-80 bucks with a core for your old one. Get the pump and all you will need is a high pressure hose from a 78-79 bronco. 14 Bucks if that. Well worth the money. Planning on doing that as soon as my pump starts to make a little noise.

When I pulled my engine, I just pulled the whole bracket with pump off the side of the block. But then again you have AC and I dont so I just have an idler pulley there. Shouldnt be too hard to do. The pulley might just be pressed on with nothing holding it on.

Yeah my brother made mention of the PS pulley puller but when I looked at my pulley I couldn't venture to guess how the hell I could put some kind of puller on there. Guess I'll just have to go see what the tool looks like.

Mike I think I might just need a new O-ring somewhere but I'm gonna take it off and inspect it to make sure I don't have a cracked reservoir or something like that.

If the pump is toast then I will consider the saginaw swap-- it's something that I've looked into before.

The tool is weird looking, definatly something that wouldnt look like a puller if it was out of the box and laying on the floor. Il snap a pic

Dont ask me how it works because i havent used it myself. My dad knows because he took the pully off his power steering pump on his project truck

The middle peice with slide over a the center part of that pulley, there is a lip, then you will tighten the bolt and the pulley will slide off the shaft. I normally spray PB or WD to help with sliding. You know lube it up. Anway you will understand when you do it.

What he said... The pulley hub has a lip to grab hold of with the collars. The AZ tool has two halves that are held by a ring. The puller par is held inside the halves, and pushes off the shaft of the pump. The AZ policy on the tool rentals is essentially, you buy it, then return it. If you don't return it, you just own it.
