My truck is A fuel sucking beast! (Trouble codes 62 and 67)

Trouble codes 62 and 67

I was hoping to get a little help here, I have a '92 F250-460-auto, mild lift and 33's. I just bought this one a few months ago and I only get 6mpg, and I don't allow my rpm's to pass 2k. I realize that 460 stands for "really bad gas mileage" but I have only had 460's for the past years and I usually get at least ten- even when I'm heavy foot. I have replaced the plugs, the truck can spin the tires from a stand still, but I think it might be lacking at higher speed but I'm not sure if that's just the automatic vs. manual (this is my first-and last automatic) -Any Ideas???

No doubt that the 460 is thirsty but 6mpg is pretty nasty, even with 33s.

You said you did plugs. Did you replace wires, dist cap/rotor, fuel filter? Might also do well to run some injector cleaner through, and change the o2 sensors if they're old. A bad o2 sensor can yield some nasty gas mileage. Pull the codes and see if the computer has registered anything, even if you haven't had a check engine light it could have codes stored.

yea, 6 is pretty low. are you towing? how much?

unloaded you should be getting 10+. 12 or 13 is about the max

What sort of gears are in the rear axle?

If you have some super low gears, that could be a big part of the issue.

that could make sense. by "lacking at higher speed" do you mean:
-i can't go faster than 65 without the engine screaming
or
-i have no power on the highway

either of the above with a crazy high or crazy low gear ratio could cause bad mpgs

as a reference, i had a 97 f250 2x4 supercab that at 2k rpm on the highway, i'd be at 65mph. that's put me at about 11.5 mpg.

He'd have to be running some super nasty aftermarket gears to be getting mileage like that. Even with my 4.10s I run around 2000rpms at 65mph on the freeway. Ain't no way he should be getting 6mpg from something like that.

much help

Thanks for your help so far. To answer most of your questions- As far as I know the gears are stock, By "lacking" I mean that I hit 75mph at about 3k rpm's and cant push the truck faster wheather I am empty or towing, unless I get a down hill. I do tow often (3K-5K lbs)and my mileage is about 5.5mpg.

I meant 5.5 when towing vs the 6 when empty

Does the truck ping at all? When's the last time you checked the timing?

Like I said before... I think the very first thing you should do is pull the codes.

your speed/rpms is partially to blame, but you still have something else going on.

75mph in mine would put me in the single digits pretty easily. (9 ish).
i could see a lift, 4x4, towing, etc bring it down even more

I will pull the codes after work. I have also thought timing or fuel pressure regulator. No pinging, no sputtering, no rough ilding ect.

Tom's right about the speed... If you wanna gain some immediate MPGs, I'd pull your speed back a bit. There's a pretty drastic decline in mpg's for me after I pass around 65-70mph.

I appologize for being misleading, I am hardly ever on the freeway, and do stay at slower speeds, but the few times I have tried to go faster I can't do much past 75, I was just giving an example of "lacking"

Oo that reminds me Jurgen--

Gas Sucker-- You might also want to put a fuel pressure gauge on the rail and see what kind of fuel pressure you're getting ;)
