By definition a limited slip is a positive traction device. Posi is a chevrolet term to describe a limited slip clutch style differential, the exact same thing as a ford limited slip. There is NO difference. Lets keep this thread civil or it will be locked.

Now that I think about it, the clutch style diff that I saw that was engaged full time but slipped around corners may not have been a real "posi" since it technically wasn't a GM product, but rather aftermarket. So as far as terminology I believe I was wrong. At the time I had it confused with something else.

A clutch style limited slip differential works by friction from the clutches. There is a set amount of pre load that decides the amount of torque it takes to break the friction and allow one side to spin independently of the other. All clutch style differentials work this way. There is only one exception. That is an aftermarket unit that is a clutch style LS that also has an electric device that locks both sides mechanically, essentially giving the smae qualities as a spool.

Also known as a selectable locker or selectable locking differential. 'smiliepig'

Exactly right. I can't remember who is making the selectable locker with the limited slip feature though. Most selectable lockers are either locker or open.

FYI, an Eaton locker is what Chebbie + GMC use on their trucks. Posi (LS) is a Rear-wheel drive car application only in GM-land. These days, that means Corvette or Pontiac G8. The upside to the locker is both wheels spin together when engaged- it's more effective. The downside is "chatter" when making hard left or right turns, and they have been known to grenade in strenuous use.

Now I know what I was thinking of.

Limited slip that performs open untill needed. Not a clutch, set up though.

A POSI that functions as you describe, and the POSI that I was thinking of. This one is NOT open till needed, but rather preloaded at all times with a central spring. This falls under their LSD category too.

Also, the e-locker performs open till the user decides to lock it. So, no clutches there.

thanks everyone for the help. i plan on replacing the the ring gear and the clutches. i posted some pictures of the ring gear. neither the ring gear nor the pinion gear looked bad at all (minus the chip in the ring gear) would it be bad for me to just replace the ring gear and just keep the pinion untouched?

Replace them both at the same time. They "wear into" each other.

exactly...that's like pulling an engine apart and not marking where the rods, wristpins, and pistons go....you just DON'T do it unless you REEEEEALLY wanna take it back apart.
