Pull the valve cover, # 1 TDC, both valves should be closed.

Put a little oil In the cylinder and turn it over that will help increase the compression.
A dowel wrapped in a chunk of rubber pressed against the plug hole and you should hear the air escaping on the compression stroke.
Or start a plug and put soap around the threads it will bubble on compression stroke.
Otherwise pull the covers.

Ok get ready to get your feelings really hurt. I am pissed I didn't get to respond in your last thread, ha ha now I get to get you riled up in this one.

1. Your vacation from the internet gave you time to put your truck back together, maybe you should have been working on it more than talking about working on it.

2. If you don't know how to verify TDC compression on any individual cylinder, Ford is going to have a long long row to hoe with you, not to mention your instructor is going to have a field day with you.

Now for the help, genius, pull the valve cover off, when #1 piston is at TDC, are both rocker arms loose? If not, your on exhaust.

That is all, now get your truck fixed. We won't even get into diesel, as you have not graduated from gas yet.

On a lighter note, we could rename this thread Shazzam, you know like Gomer Pyle used to say.

Seeing how Brad took the liberty to tell you that your distributor is 180 out, I just wanted to make sure you will never forget how to determine TDC compression stroke ever again. I would tell you an easy way to determine "absolute" TDC and how to mark it, but it would probably be pretty smart azzed, so you would move on to another post.

i was talking about the smart *** remarks about the instructor and bout instead of talking about it i should work on it.. etc....

but thanks for the tips.

You think I am giving you a hard time? Not in the least. You go into a dealership running your mouth to techs that forgot more than you know and they will laugh you out of the dealership, after they make it extremely hard on you. I am picking on you specificly because it bothers you. Your skin is really thin, it will need to get much thicker before you succeed at any level in life.

Take this as a friendly example of much harder things to come in life. This is just the web, where nothig is real or has any true consequences. Wait til rent, gas money, utility bills, groceries are on the line as to how you handle situations, especially by people who get under your skin.

As others have stated whining about how your being treated here or in real life just shows the generation you are from. To be accepted by elders and shown the ropes, you need to be much more reserved. Trust me, I have seen more people run off out of the oilfield in a day than you will see in a year. Remember this, these are the guys that are going to show you how to beat book time an make a decent living for your family, they don't have to show you a damn thing, but they will if you show then you want it bad enough. School means nothing, remember this here and now, all it does is gets you in the door, it will never equal field/shop real world experience.

Look up in the right hand corner of my post, specifically at my post count, then look at the date I joined. I come here on a daily basis, I read much more than I post, very rarely do I post about a subject that I am not willing to bet my paycheck or my reputation on. Talk less listen more, that is todays lesson.

X2 it was my first thought..

X3...as soon as I heard it was rolling, but not firing. If you're having difficulty feeling the compression stroke, cut the juice and have Ann bump the key with your thumb over #1...or I like using a dowl. Beyond that, pop the vc off and for even more verification, pop the oil pan off and see what's going on.

idk either... just woke up.. dont see any of it... but i do know some of it was not needed..

And Lester, dude, i respect you to the fullest, you have such a wide range of knowledge that i dont ever expect to reach. But come on... your assuming way to much.. to think im going to go into a dealership acting like i know everything is a pure sign of not knowing me, i ask questions everytime im not sure on something... So please dont assume anything. and as far as all the remarks towards me being a "long long row to hoe with you, not to mention your instructor is going to have a field day with you" i understand this, and this is why im going to school, to learn alot of the stuff i've never been able to learn.

My dad aint big into vehicles, was never able to teach me much, most everything i know is through asking pretty much... i'm freaking trying to learn, not get lectured everytime i turn a corner..

I would take the time to pull the cover and do it that way. That way you are sure. I have been in this position MANY times, and through the advice of others, have figured my way through it. Do the same and take your time.

Edit: Hell I had to walk away from my truck MANY times to keep my head straight with it.

i've gotten it extremely close... now i'm just alil bit off.. at one point it was backfiring through the intake so i advanced the timing but too much.. then my battery got really low.... so i stopped... plus i was doing all this while it was raining pretty good outside...

Yep same here walked far away before I blew it into tiny pieces.
Or punch a fender in. Did that once just made more work fixing the dent and repainting it.

You can put a piece of paper in and watch it shoot out on the compression stroke as well.
