In bed spare tire mount

Looking for a spare tire mount that I can put in the bed. I wanna carry a full size spare but it won't fit under the truck. Anybody had experience with which ones work well? I want the type that bolts to the side of the inside of the bed.

get all thread, bend it in a (J), then it will attach under the bed lip, use washers and nuts to attach the tire. That way, it can be totally removed when you need extra space.

What's crossed my mind, if I had a need for something like that, is to get a front-mount receiver hitch.

Then it'd be short work to fab up a mount to hold the tire and rim off of it. I know it would cut down airflow, but being just mounted on a receiver tube, it would be short work to remove it when you were hauling or it was really hot out.

I know a guy who's got all his trucks set up with two spares mounted aft of the wheelwells, one on each side. Not sure how they're fastened in, though. Looks good, but I'm not sure how it would balance with just a single tire. (Doubt his is locked, either, but you could rig up a lock one way or another, I'm sure.)

I've seen em with one tire I think it looks cool :) As long as it's an oversized tire so it looks a little mean ;)

And yeah of course I'd rig up some kind of locking mechanism.

I don't have a flareside Brian, it would look awfully silly bulging off the side of my truck. Not to mention it would be a pain to PARK!

And a 255/70/16 is only a 30 inch tire. This is a 33" tire that I'm trying to make room for. Ain't gonna fit underneath.

The outside the bed part was a joke.

The rest was real. I know mine is only 30". I assumed there was way more room under a full size truck than there is under a tiny explorer. A 33" tire only needs 1.5" inches more room on each side than what mine is. I was just saying the books say my stock size spare will not fit under there. However, it fits fine. No issues at all.

I did have to drop it to bolt the hitch on. I could not reach behind it to get to the bolts with the torque wrench.

I think a single looks good between the cab and wheelwells, but you've got a toolbox there. Behind the axle, I don't care for it so much...

I suppose another important consideration, is whether this is a good looking tire mounted on a good looking rim, or some old junk... I was parked next to a friend's truck the other day, she's got a bald tire mounted on a rusty steel wheel mounted in the bed. I'm sure it was done because the factory mount rusted off and not for looks, but it certainly doesn't improve the appearance of the truck any.

Travis I don't need to be adding any MORE length to my truck, lol! Otherwise I'd actually love to do that.

Ian, this would most likely be a brand new 33" tire (or 35" BFG A/T when I finally upgrade). And I was planning on using the wheel that my current spare tire is mounted on, which I THINK is a stock-type wheel but I'm not sure. If it's ugly then I'd buy a new wheel too, to match the rest of my wheels.

i mounted a piece of c-channel to my bed rail, drilled it to take a piece of threaded rod and it was bullet proof. mine was a shortbox, and i agree Chris...i like the look alot.last pic was before all the work was done.

Be nice! All of my tires are bald and the wheels rusty (multicolored, peeling paint, runs). Including the one on the bedside. In fact, the bedside one (leaks) is an old bias ply that was on the wheel (1956 wheel) when it was given to me.

i'm not a big fan of the look. i carry mine just laying in the bed. but...it's a junk rim with an equally junk tire on it, so no one will steal it.

what about one of those "tiregate" things that lets you use a tire-holder as a tailgate?

I was looking at those... Add about another foot to the rear of my truck because of the depth of the tire. I'd love to mount a tire BEHIND the truck but I just don't want this damned thing to be any longer than it already is.

There is a factory mount that fits side . But with your tire size . Id put a hook in floor and one on back of tool box . That way it could lay flat you could use almost any hooked tire hold down. Then if have to haul anything could put on box.

The large tire mounted in back of bed on side will look strange I have done it . but was not happy . I and if you r a rear view mirror guy it will block your view.

when i looked at them before (for my ranger), you could mount them either way.
example:
the way you're thinking \ bed cab
they way i'm thinking /bed cab

that way doesn't take up any more room, and i like how it looked angled in too

EDIT: found the pics
