How does one install door handle pads?

I am talking about the pads that fit underneath the door handle. I had one fall off, ordered replacements, but apparently it's not as easy as inserting them back underneath the handle.

It looks there is a lip on the top and bottom of the pad, so the handle mechanism has to come out(from inside the door) to put the pad in place?

Are you talking about the pad under the outer door handle or the seal that goes under the inner door handle? I'm thinking you mean outer door handle.

If so then yes the door handle needs to be removed. On some of the handles Ford used rivets to hold them on. Some had a nut on the inside of the door. If you have rivets then drill them out and use a countersunk screw to retain the handle.

Yes, Scott, I am talking about the outer door handle. I should have been more specific. Thank you. Your truck is coming along nicely.

Thanks. Is your door handle bolted or riveted? I've only seen one that had nuts, all the rest were rivets. Where did you find new pads?

That's a good price for the pair. I'll be getting a pair of those for the build, thanks.

You would be able to tell they are rivets just by lookin at em. Sounds like you probably have nuts on the inside of your door.

In my own world
The "newer" trucks all have bolts.

If your handles are pitted, now would be a good time to put a set of NOS, or repros on there.

What ? I need a picture of this. Sounds pretty cool.
I've seen the plastic inserts with FORD on it . Is that what you have ?

Yes, Mark, they are the plastic inserts. I guess they are made to look like mother of pearl, with FORD printed in black. I can take a picture if you want but I'm gone for three or four days.

And Eric, there are going to be three nuts behind the wheel. :wasntme:

Don't be suprised if the new handle pads don't fit quite right. I just some new ones from DC on my original handles and they were off just a bit, but worked.

Considering this is the gen 6 section how much newer are you talking about? I've got a 79 in the garage right now that had rivets originally and another 79 that had nuts. All I work on is 79's and I've seen it both ways on plenty of trucks and I've taken quite a few of them apart.

I found a newer set of handles with "FORD" printed on them, so I will be using those.
EDIT: I missed the mention of inserts

I have those on my truck.
They look good because they are silver and my truck is silver.
