Hello! I'm Clueless!

Howdy everyone! I grew up in the suburbs dreaming of a place in the country and learning how to do mechanics. Dreams do come true! I've got a little farm I run by myself and currently operate it with a tiny sedan. yes, I've transported grown sheep and pigs in my car. and hay. and as much feed as i can stuff in my 2 door. I really want a truck.

I keep buying old trucks to fix up and learn mechanics on but neither is working at the moment. The last truck I bought was a 1973 f-250 and has fuel line issues. People keep saying "just scrap them! buy a new truck on a monthly payment plan." Might have been smarter, but im stubborn and am going to get my beasts running.

I tend to start learning by doing hard stuff first. So far I've never changed oil but I rebuilt the body on my sedan after a "total" and this weekend dropped the gas tank on truck (easy except for that 2 inch bolt!). I'm sure I'll provide plenty of entertainment you ya'll.

Welcome....and second let me say that I don't agree with the whole buy a new vehicle philosophy as most people here know....I think you're doing it right......even the right "project" truck you can get fairly cheap at $700-1000 or even something that is fairly reliable in the $1500-2500 range that will do great on your farm with a little tinkering here and there.....I envy you cause, I too, am working on building my tools and learning how to work and maintain these old rigs.

You probably want to add a repair manual to your library for the truck. They help answer a lot of general repair questions. BUT, the guys and gals around here are very patient and will help you get your truck running and keep it going. The 73-79 series are favorites around here as you will figure out.

It's been a long time since I dropped the tank on one that age but they're not too bad to sort out. (I bought a '77 when they were new - yeah, I'm old) I still think of them as newer trucks since I've been messing around with 48-52's for the last 15 yrs.

Pictures help sometimes. Ask for whatever you need help with and welcome!

Welcome to FTF :)

I really enjoyed reading your introduction! When I first meet my wife she hauled everything farm related in her little Mazda 323. Just drop down the back seats and in goes the horse feed and bale of Timmy, lol!

side note: Ken wrote a great breakdown of the pros and cons of new vs. used when buying a vehicle.

Oh you can bet the first thing I did was get a repair manual. ;) I much prefer the chilton manuals, but Haynes was all I could get. Doesn't cover stuff like, "what is this tube that is all broken up and leading to no where off the carb? (is this even the carb?)"

Answer: its the return fuel line that is broken into bits and pieces! :D

Welcome to FTF - if you have the room on your new place i'd stash a couple of spare parts trucks out the back that you can cannibalise to keep yours running :)
