I've pretty much decided that I want to go with one of the 'fuel injection' conversions on Red. Considering I was on the verge of going with a new carb anyway, what's a few more hundred to gain some fuel economy as well as being able to drive upside down. Anyway, I've posted the idea before, but can't really make heads or tails between the systems or what I would actually require. Any help, info or guidance would be much appreciated.

I've found several Holley Projection systems for less than $350 on CL, but everything I've seen says those systems are super finicky. Dunno if I'd want to go used or not though.

^^^Can't view at work...but thanks. My main question is, everyone claims to be the best. You have the Accel DFI system, Holley Avenger EFI, Mass-Flo, Howell, etc...what's the difference between the systems??? It looks like Massflo has the most maintenance free system, but it's also $3500 (about a grand more than the others). Beyond that, they all have the same options, they all offer the same size TBI, etc. etc. What distinguishes them??? Or is basically just a preference like Holley vs. Edelbrock???

Hmmm...been readin some SEFI conversions using 351W and 460 parts. I'm liking the way that sounds.

I am going to use Professional Products Powerjection III, I've done a pile of reading on the different systems and know of a couple of guys that run them here.
The software seems very similar to the type we have on the bikes, which I like.

That powerinjection III system looks awesome.

The couple of guys I know that are running it here have nothing but good to say about it, there was a learning curve with the software, but I ran into the same thing with the bike ECM's...but once you learnt how it works, it was fantastic.
I have the fuel maps damn near ideal on the bikes now, 113CI, 130+HP and 50+ mpg....:D

For anyone interested...theres a killer write up by a user named jopes on FSB and Project Bronco for sequential EFI on a 400. Looks like the biggest difference in the work involved between the 460 SEFI setup and the TBI set up is some machine work on the intake. From the parts list, it looks like it's about a grand cheaper than most/all of the TBI swaps as well. Best part...you're using all Ford parts.

Benny, once you go EFI you'll never turn back. My Subby has TBI on a 400SBC and there is no comparison to a carburetor... Those all sound like pretty good prices too...

Been doing a lot of reading in this thread:

http://www.broncotech.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=5;t=003046;p=0

...and I think I'm more confused now than I was before I started searching. I understand the parts list, but calculating injector size, distributor science and the wiring behind the whole ordeal is above my head. Definitely still want to go this route on Red, but I wish someone made an 'EFI by numbers' for this kinda swap.

Your best bet tis to find people who kow what they are doing and are willing to help you out. I am a member at Gearhead-EFI.com - they are the best resource on GM EFI... There, AFAIK, are fewer resources for Ford EFI then GM because the Ford was more complicated...

as typical...Red has still been sitting, I haven't bought any new carbs...bought a couple used ones though...haven't started tapping any spare manifolds...but I have come across a couple Howell systems. Anyone have anything to say about their systems one way or the other. These go back to primarily a TBI set up. Guy used it on a 302, has the ECM PN, but not the system PN...so I guess I'll be doing some cross referencing.

Just a suggestion....but i run the stock 2150 carb on my 400 an it gives the same driveabilty (now that its rebuilt) as EFI does (even in cold weather i pump it twice and it takes right off), and im getting about 13MPG (cant see doing any better with EFI....)

Plus you can pick them up in any junkyard for next to nothing and the rebuild kit is 15 bucks.....

I contemplated going with EFI on mine but the hassle, buy in cost, etc etc, just want worth it to me in the long run.

^^^I hear ya...my carbs have always functioned better than anticipated. However, regardless of what carb you use, you still can drive upside down (or at a 35* angle) and there's still warm up time and icing to worry about.

I get 14mpg's hwy out of my Bronco...which is stellar, but I know guys that are claiming upwards of 18-20mpg's with a relatively stock set up and tbi.

For the record, I have several 2150's sitting on the part shelf if you want any more.smilieFordlogo

Warm up time is a good idea even on an EFI engine...if only so the oil can get everywhere....

Who really needs to drive upside down? Plus....if your at a 35* angle with aFront sump engine your going to have oiling issues....
